What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Erin: I work from a cognitive behavioral approach to help individuals assess the evidence for their thoughts and explore how these thoughts impact the way they feel. I also utilize mindfulness techniques to help clients learn to identify what they are thinking, feeling, and experiencing in the here and now to enhance awareness and emotional regulation. Finally, I utilize behavioral activation techniques to help clients break down their goals into manageable steps and create reward patterns to reinforce progress made over time.

Jami: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is making sure we build a strong relationship and connection first, as it can sometimes be harder to feel that warmth over online therapy, so this is extra important. I find the best benefit in taking a couple of sessions post-intake to really get to know the client before fully jumping into treatment goals because it helps us have a clear idea of where we've come from and where we're heading.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Erin: In therapy, I teach about the following:

  • Identifying distorted thinking patterns
  • The stages of change: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance
  • Reframing interpretations
  • Challenging inaccurate core beliefs
  • Mindfulness techniques
  • Emotional regulation techniques
  • Thinking through the consequences
  • Practicing gratitude
  • Reflecting on progress made
  • Setting boundaries
  • Growth vs. fixed mindsets
  • Noticing and accepting
  • Exposure and desensitizing

Jami: I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Self-reflection: Learning how to really stop, clear out the noise, and listen to your body, feelings, and inner self gives you a clearer picture of the “problem” or goal at hand.
  • Healthy coping skills: Healthy outlets for stress and handling intense emotions, outlets that don't put us deeper into negative cycles with a well-rounded focus on the whole self — mind, body, soul — help you heal effectively.
  • Communication and boundaries: Boundaries are so crucial to healthy, happy relationships with yourself and others. We need strong communication skills to be able to share these boundaries effectively.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Erin: I know a client is making meaningful progress in a number of ways. One, I can tell by how they are talking about their experiences. Clients begin naturally reframing and improving the accuracy of their interpretations. Two, meaningful progress is made when clients report that they are feeling better overall for a consistent period of time. Three, meaningful progress is made when they are following through on intentional changes that produce real improvements to their quality of life.

Jami: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they come with their own insights, they're actively and independently deploying the skills we've covered in sessions successfully, and they report feeling better equipped to tackle their life goals.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Erin: Clients can supplement their time in therapy by exploring additional resources that support their therapeutic agenda such as reading books and listening to podcasts. It is also helpful when clients journal to track what they are experiencing day to day in order to provide accurate information on the experiences they are having and any changes that may take place between sessions.

Jami: In their personal time, clients can supplement online therapy by journaling, practicing applying what was discussed in sessions, and keeping a log throughout the week of things that happened that would be important to bring up in their next session.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Erin: To prepare for your first therapy session, you can think about what you would like to work towards in your sessions and what you are hoping to get out of the experience. Most importantly though, therapy welcomes you as you are! In terms of online preparation, it is important to make sure that you have a safe, comfortable, and private location without distractions for the therapy sessions. You also will want to check to make sure that your wifi connection is stable and that you have practiced with the online platform in order to easily sign on for the session when it's time.

Jami: To prepare for your first online therapy session, I'd make sure you have good internet connection, establish a private calm space to complete your session in, and disconnect from distractions.

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Bethlehem, PA accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

What Is Online Counseling? How Does Online Counseling Work?

Online therapy is the convenient way to work with a therapist or counselor. It works to eliminate a long commute, traffic, and other unfortunate external factors that make therapy a hassle. If you decide to pursue online counseling, you’ll get to choose from a few options when it comes to how you work with your counselor or coach: You can connect with your therapist by phone or video. If you choose the former option, your counselor or coach will simply call you at the time of your appointment (make sure you have service!). If you choose the latter, you’ll be given a link that you can visit to connect with your counselor.

Now, in certain cases, you can also choose to work with your counselor via email/text messaging. This is a more relaxed approach to counseling, and it might be the right approach for you, if you’re looking for a casual experience in therapy. On that note, online therapy is not right for everyone. However, research shows that online counseling can be effective for a wide range of individuals facing a variety of life challenges.

Is Online Therapy Right For Me?

As we just mentioned, online therapy is not the best option for everyone! However, it does prove effective for many people and it could prove to help you. In our experience, online therapy—whether it’s telephone-based or video conferencing—is especially helpful to people who…

  • Cannot find a qualified counselor, therapist, or coach in the area
  • Feel uncomfortable working with a counselor in person
  • Would prefer to attend their appointment from home
  • Are looking for quicker, more flexible therapy options

If any of the above describe you, then you might benefit from pursuing online counseling. If you’re looking for Lehigh counseling, you’re in the right place. Thriveworks Bethlehem, PA can set you up with an online therapist as soon as today. We’re also available to talk to you more extensively about what online counseling entails and whether it might be the right fit for you.

Kenneth Fulton has been my psychologist for over a year and a half. He has brought meaning back to my life, after losing my mother in February 2020 and dealing with covid. I can never put into words what his counseling has done for me. I went from a very dark place back into the light again. He's the greatest at what he does. I could go on and on about this counselor but that would take too long. Thank you Ken for everything you've done.

Through my sessions with Lora I’ve been able to stop doubting myself and my capabilities. My life has changed drastically for the better through her teachings and spot-on feedback. I started seeing Lora because I was going through a tough breakup and not only were we able to acknowledge the toxicity of that relationship, we were also able to tackle my productivity issues at work and I have since completely turned my career around. I feel as though I’ve been running with a ton of weight on my shoulders and Lora was able to guide me on how to liberate myself from all of these burdens and run freely! Thank you Lora, don’t know where I’d be without ya!

I worked with Christiana for nearly four years in a clinical setting. In our agency, she was known as a compassionate counselor and was very sought-after by clients because of her caring nature and ability to hold clients accountable when needed. Her solid clinical skills made her a colleague I could always count on for solid feedback and a very thorough way of addressing client needs. She was able to look at clinical issues from multiple perspectives and with a real sense of fairness and respect for the client. Christiana is a rare find in this field!
