What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is to help them explore their primary emotions behind their secondary emotions, such as anger and jealousy. I find the best benefit in emotions work because it helps partners have a deeper understanding for each other and can lay the groundwork for more effective communication.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling:

  • Mindfulness, so one can work on staying in the present rather than in the past or future.
  • RAIN, which are four steps to allow one to not be so hard on oneself.
  • Communication skills, so one can better express their needs and desires.
  • Boundary-setting, so there can be clearer expectations within the relationship.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when they are opening themselves to vulnerability, both within the session and within their relationship. Vulnerability is scary, but it can also help strengthen connections.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Couples can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling by practicing the skills taught to them outside of their sessions. They can also perform acts of kindness for each other with intentionality and verbally appreciate the other for the act to foster positive emotions for each other.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling, you can discuss with each other what the goal of counseling should be, and what each of you wants to gain from it, such as a better understanding of your partner or working on codependency.

Starting Marriage counseling

What is marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in Bethlehem, PA is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in Bethlehem, PA work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.

What Is Marriage Counseling? How Can It Help?

Marriage counseling is designed to help a couple work through whatever it is that’s causing their relationship strain. While these challenges vary greatly from person to person, here are some questions that commonly guide the course of marriage counseling:

  • What are our biggest issues and which are most important?
  • Are we happy together? Do we want to stay together?
  • How do each of us truly feel about our relationship?
  • Do our visions for the future align?
  • Are we both willing to change to improve our marriage?

These questions will help you and your partner, as well as your counselor, understand exactly what’s wrong in your relationship and what your goals in therapy should be. Once these issues and goals have been identified, then a treatment plan can be determined.

Who Can Benefit from Marriage Counseling?

At Thriveworks, we believe that everybody can benefit from working with a mental health professional—and every relationship can benefit from receiving some professional guidance. Kenneth Fulton has been my psychologist for over a year and a half. He has brought meaning back to my life, after losing my mother in February 2020 and dealing with covid. I can never put into words what his counseling has done for me. I went from a very dark place back into the light again. He's the greatest at what he does. I could go on and on about this counselor but that would take too long. Thank you Ken for everything you've done.

Through my sessions with Lora I’ve been able to stop doubting myself and my capabilities. My life has changed drastically for the better through her teachings and spot-on feedback. I started seeing Lora because I was going through a tough breakup and not only were we able to acknowledge the toxicity of that relationship, we were also able to tackle my productivity issues at work and I have since completely turned my career around. I feel as though I’ve been running with a ton of weight on my shoulders and Lora was able to guide me on how to liberate myself from all of these burdens and run freely! Thank you Lora, don’t know where I’d be without ya!

I worked with Christiana for nearly four years in a clinical setting. In our agency, she was known as a compassionate counselor and was very sought-after by clients because of her caring nature and ability to hold clients accountable when needed. Her solid clinical skills made her a colleague I could always count on for solid feedback and a very thorough way of addressing client needs. She was able to look at clinical issues from multiple perspectives and with a real sense of fairness and respect for the client. Christiana is a rare find in this field!
