What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for couples/marriage therapy is a cognitive behavioral approach. I think it is important to explore past and current behaviors and thoughts in order to move together toward healthier behaviors or coping patterns as a couple. I use many approaches. I do not think everyone responds to one specific approach.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I use a lot of communication skills when working with couples, including how to communicate so you are heard, how to open the lines of communication, and how to take space when needed and when doing so is hard.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know couples are making meaningful progress when they start to communicate on their own without having to come to therapy to discuss an issue.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling by spending time together, making connections with each other, and using communication tools used in therapy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can be ready to talk about what brings you both into therapy now. Be ready to be patient — your partner may have a different perspective than you.

Need more help deciding?

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once wrote, “It is not a lack of love but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.” Love can sometimes be a one-trick pony, but genuine friendship demands mutual respect and understanding. Maybe the greatest marriages and intimate relationships have both friendship and passionate love in equal measure. But both friends and lovers have falling outs from time to time. Fortunately, there’s a way to talk through differences in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.

What Is Couples Counseling? How Does It Work?

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Narrative therapy
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Collaborative couples therapies
  • Emotionally focused therapy (EFT)
  • Person-centered therapy
  • Strength-based therapy

  • Substance abuse or addiction counseling

  • Depression counseling
  • Anxiety therapy
  • Mindfulness

These therapies often have similar aims, to uncover deeper truths about what partners are feeling and to find areas of compatibility, not conflict.

Does Couples Counseling Really Work?

If both partners are ready and willing to put the effort in, they will most likely be satisfied with the results of couples counseling. First of all, it’s usually brief, accomplishing the couples’ goals in 12 sessions or fewer. Second, it’s focused on solutions. The therapists at Thriveworks in Hoffman Estates, IL start by finding out what each partner wants from therapy. Goals can run the gamut, but here are some common examples:

  • To resolve conflicts
  • To work through unique relationship issues
  • To reduce household tension
  • To stop repeating the same argument
  • To establish healthy boundaries
  • To manage anger
  • To improve rapport
  • To express sexuality
  • To confront alcohol abuse or addiction
  • To heal after infidelity
  • To identify individual mental health conditions that are affecting the relationship
  • To process trauma together
  • To grieve and cope with loss together
  • To manage life transitions
  • To cope with empty nest syndrome
  • To support each other through infertility
  • To ultimately improve their relationship

Partners don’t always have the same goals, but a skilled therapist can help find overlap and make sure everyone’s needs are heard and met.

I had 6 or 7 sessions with Nancy Fredricks. A lovely lady. However, I had to end my sessions with her. I started becasue I was going through a depression, which was not normal for me. I had never had councelling on my own before. I'd had marriage councelling, but never individual councelling. Nancy did not ask a lot of questions or offer much in the way of practical solutions. Also, Nancy spends a lot of time scratching her head. I'm not sure what her condition is, but it is very distracting to watch during a therapy session. I'm not saying that talking to Nancy didn't help me. But it was not offering enough of a value that I would continue on with it. I wish her a lot of success in the future.

Absolutely unbelievable..I would never on my life have thought that the therapist needs a therapist for her own issues with dealing with people and client feedback. I'm very disappointed with nancy Frederick. She is no where qualified to act as a financial advisor or medical doctor and give unprofessional and non solicited advice.
