What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I prefer using CBT because it allows clients to understand the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I teach the following tools in CBT:

  • Coping skills, including meditation, breathing, journaling, and more to support symptom management and mood regulation.
  • The importance of creating structure in your day. We will discuss building routines around socialization, physical activity, hobbies, and personal interests.
  • We learn how emotions are neither good nor bad to minimize feelings of guilt and shame.
  • We learn how to use empathy and compassion as the compass for our mental health journey.
  • We learn to reframe irrational fears, thoughts, and beliefs by challenging them using facts and positive collected evidence.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know a client is making progress in CBT when they begin to make meaningful emotional and behavioral changes that support the goal they came into treatment to address.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in CBT by implementing coping skills throughout the day, establishing healthy routines, and surrounding themselves with a support system that allows them to feel seen, heard, and validated.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To prepare for your first CBT session, you can start by making a choice that you are worthy of investing in yourself and acknowledging how brave you are to take the first step in scheduling an appointment.

Talisha Harrison helped me by giving me the tools to help me navigate some difficult relationships. I also appreciate how kind, sensitive, and empathetic she was as I have been grieving a recent loss of a parent. I have also been recovering from a serious medical condition. Should I feel the need to seek counseling in the future, I would not hesitate to return to counseling with Talisha.

I find Nancy to be a deeply compassionate, caring, mental health professional who takes a strength based approach in her practice. Her heightened mindfulness creates an environment where meaning can be cultivated. Her divergent perspectives and holistic approach transcend the work she does.
