What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

Megan: My go-to approach for couple’s therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I find the best benefit in CBT because it helps clients understand how thoughts, feelings, and actions are all connected. I also focus on communication skills.

Carri: My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is helping them understand communication styles that foster respect. I help them find the connection that brought them together in the first place. I prefer to look at individual strengths because so much of interpersonal conflict is centered on losing one's identity.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

Megan: I teach the following tools in couple’s therapy: communication skills, active listening, relationship growth activities, and soft start-ups for difficult conversations.

Carri: I teach communication skills, highlight rules for fair fighting, and look for areas of compromise. I borrow techniques from CBT, DBT, the Gottman Method, and overall mindfulness.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

Megan: I know a client is making meaningful progress in couple’s therapy when they have an improvement in overall communication and are discussing things openly and honestly.

Carri: I know a couple is making progress when they can maneuver through conflict without them reverting back to their old patterns. They are comfortable communicating with their partner.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Megan: Clients can supplement their time in couples therapy through journaling, relationship growth activities, working on communication skills, and spending quality time together.

Carri: Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling with dedicated time for connecting with each other.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

Megan: To prepare for your first couples therapy session, clients can begin to make a list identifying the top issues to work on. Journaling your thoughts and feelings and bringing the journal to therapy is also helpful.

Carri: To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, I encourage couples to reflect on what strengths they bring to the relationship. At the same time, acceptance of your role in the conflict is necessary for positive growth.

Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Couples therapy can prove valuable for many reasons, but one huge benefit is that your provider can offer professional tips for working through the issues that plague your relationship. Here are a few examples:

  1. Communicate more effectively: A common blunder for couples is poor communication. It’s easy to shut down when you feel uncomfortable about a topic of conversation, say one about finances, but it’s important that you open up and discuss it with your partner. Remember: Honesty is always the best policy.
  2. Take action: While talking through your problems is important, taking real action is equally important! Brainstorm solutions and then bring those solutions to reality by taking action.
  3. Manage your expectations: You can’t expect to build the perfect relationship overnight. In fact, sometimes moving forward means taking a few steps back first. Keep this in mind as you embark on this journey of creating a happier, healthier relationship.
  4. Stay positive: It’s also important to remember all of the good in your relationship. Don’t focus solely on the bad. Take time to shine a light on and appreciate the positive things in your relationship.
