What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

I start by developing a connection with my client and creating a space where they feel safe to explore and identify what is contributing to their anxiety. From here, I educate my clients on what anxiety is and how their thoughts and behavior patterns may be contributing. Finally, I help them develop tools and skills to reduce anxiety and increase their sense of well-being.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

The tools I find most effective for anxiety therapy are:

  • Mindfulness techniques: Clients learn to observe their internal and external experiences without judgment or attachment to what is happening in the present moment. This may include engaging your senses, like sight or smell, to become aware of your surroundings or learning how to observe and notice your thoughts without becoming attached.
  • Relaxation training: Clients learn techniques to help them relax and lower their stress. This may include tensing muscles for a brief duration and then letting them go to help reduce tension and stress in their body.
  • Guided breathing or meditation techniques: Clients learn breathing and meditation techniques that help calm their central nervous system and relax. This may include paced diaphragmatic breathing or seeing themselves in calming and relaxing scenery.
  • Reframing self-talk: Clients learn to talk to themselves in more rational and encouraging ways that help to reduce anxiety and stress. This may include asking questions like “What is the evidence for that thought?” or “Is this thought based on facts or feelings?”

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they become more self-aware and have a deeper understanding of what they are thinking and doing that does not serve them. This increased insight and self-awareness often lead clients to make beneficial changes.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

I work with my clients in creating practice work for in-between sessions to help them continue their progress and growth. This often includes applying the skills taught in therapy such as breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for your first session, I recommend being ready to communicate what is causing you to come to therapy and what you hope to gain out of it.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Waco, TX can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Waco therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Need more help deciding?

Is your anxiety frequently causing you to suffer emotional distress? If you’re interested in discovering how a mental health professional can help you learn to manage your anxiety, call Thriveworks in Waco, TX today.

Do I Have Anxiety?

Anxiety is a familiar feeling for many of us, and the thoughts or scenarios that trigger it are often unique. While it’s normal to suffer from occasional anxiety in certain situations or mindsets, when anxiety becomes a persistent problem it often harms our personal lives as a result. If you’re facing recurring anxiety, the situation that’s causing your symptoms is unique. By talking openly with a mental health professional, you can learn to identify the sources of your anxiety.

But with that in mind, there are common symptoms of recurring anxiety that are important to watch out for, including:

  • Fatigue, difficulty sleeping
  • Anger issues
  • Decreased performance at work
  • Racing thoughts, inability to concentrate
  • Digestive problems
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Low appetite, or conversely, overeating

Talk with a therapist, counselor, or psychiatric nurse practitioner (NP) about your anxiety at Thriveworks in Waco, TX. There’s no need to face your negative thoughts and emotions by yourself. Even if you’re not experiencing anxiety, you can trust that one of our providers will help to address your needs and concerns by talking with you about what’s bothering you.

Who Should I Talk to? What Type of Anxiety Could I Have?

Our providers can help to treat your anxiety in different ways, depending on both your provider’s methodology and your own needs. At Thriveworks in Waco, TX our psychologists and therapists can:

  • Use talk therapy or behavioral therapy techniques to promote your self-awareness
  • Work with clients to help them develop coping mechanisms to use in the situations that matter most
  • Help family members or partners understand their loved one’s anxiety through relationship therapy or family counseling

And if you have a more persistent or severe case of anxiety, receiving treatment from one of our psychiatric NPs could be a more effective route. Psychiatric providers are set apart by being both licensed medical doctors and therapists simultaneously. They can help with your anxiety by prescribing helpful medication that assists clients in managing the disruptive, damaging symptoms of anxiety.

Some of the different forms of anxiety that our providers can help to treat include:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Social anxiety disorder (SAD)
  • Panic disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Don’t feel like you need to know which provider type you need, or what form of anxiety you have before you’ve given us a call. Just by reaching out, we’ll be able to help you find the provider that’s right for you, and the treatment methods that fit your personality and lifestyle needs.

I have been working with Dr. Covey for almost 6 months now and she has been excellent. I feel like I am heard and understood even when I have a hard time expressing things myself and putting thoughts into words. Having someone who can actually listen and provide the resources to assist myself with past trauma and current challenges has been a life changer.

This is prior to being seen so this is strictly based on first impressions upon entering the building. The waiting area is nice but undefined as to where one should go nor any indications as to what is needed to be done. No one was there to greet us nor was there any desk or window to suggest someone would. We looked for the therapist's office but no doors had any identification to point us in the right direction. At this point we're at the mercy of the clock alerting the therapist to seek us out in the waiting area in order to be seen. Not the best first impression. I will update this review if and when we are seen.
