What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

One of my go-to approaches for helping people with relationships and their emotions is DBT because it provides clients with tools for balancing their emotions and thoughts and making wiser decisions.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

I teach the following tools in DBT: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

A client is making meaningful progress in DBT when I can see that they're able to resolve issues with another person in a more regulated manner and with fewer emotional reactions.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

To supplement DBT in their personal time, a client can track their thoughts, impulses, and urges. When a client is able to see these thoughts, impulses, and urges in front of their eyes, they are able to slow their thought process down and make wiser decisions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

To prepare for DBT, a person can read ahead on mindfulness and get a general overview of DBT to see if they are able to commit to the time that is required for this type of therapy.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
