Starting Marriage counseling

What is marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in San Antonio, TX is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in San Antonio, TX work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.

Need more help deciding?

Anyone in a marriage knows that staying together can be just as difficult as getting together. That is why so many spouses vow to love each other “in good times and bad, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health.” Marriages often have seasons that are bad, poor, and sick. Marriages often need help, and more and more, spouses are going to marriage counseling to get the help they need.

The professionals at Thriveworks San Antonio frequently see spouses who need a little help creating a better relationship. We know that marriage takes work, and that every relationship will struggle at some point. The counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in San Antonio, TX are ready and qualified to guide you through your struggles and help you find clarity. With both in-person and online therapy options, Thriveworks can adapt to your needs while providing comprehensive evidence-based care.

Do I Need Marriage Counseling?

When couples are struggling, they often want to know, is this a reason why other people start marriage counseling? In essence, they want to know Will marriage therapy help? There are no easy answers to this question. Marriage therapy helps many couples, and how they define “help” is crucial. Sometimes, having a better relationship means working through difficult topics together. Sometimes, having a better relationship means parting ways with as much kindness and respect as is possible. In both cases, marriage counselors are often helpful guides.

How to Tell If I Need Couples Therapy

Should you and your spouse start marriage therapy? Just as there are no guarantees about the future of a relationship, there is no right or wrong time to start marriage counseling. It is a very personal decision, but if you are wondering if therapy may help, it probably can. Here are a few reasons spouses have started marriage counseling at Thriveworks San Antonio:

1.) The fighting is constant.

Marriage therapists talk about The Golden Ratio: for every one negative interaction that spouses have, they need to have five positive ones. Negative interactions have great power to inflict harm. When disagreements occur too often or when differences are not handled respectfully, then both spouses may suffer. It may be time to go see a marriage counselor and learn some conflict resolution skills.

2.) There is nothing to fight about.

When couples do not fight, there could be several reasons. One spouse’s emotions, thoughts, and needs may be dominated by the other spouse’s emotions, thoughts, and needs. Each spouse needs to maintain their individuality for the marriage to be healthy.

Another possibility is that both spouses are so worn out with fighting that they have given up and apathy has set in. In either case, the root cause needs to be identified and addressed. It may be time to go see a marriage counselor and learn some communication skills.

3.) Someone cheated.

An affair is a crisis. It is also a decision point. Some couples work through the betrayal and try to save their marriage—although this is a tough process. Some couples decide to divorce—another tough process. There are no right answers, and there are no easy paths after one or both spouses have cheated. Whatever path each spouse chooses, it may be time to go see a marriage counselor.

4.) Each spouse is trying to change the other spouse.

In healthy relationships, people accept responsibility for their own growth—they do not try to change others. This is particularly true of a healthy marriage relationship. When spouses try to change each other, they never succeed. Instead, they often introduce frustration, shame, and disappointment into their relationship. If spouses are trying to change each other, it may be time to go see a marriage counselor to learn how to set boundaries.

I have been working with Dr. Covey for almost 6 months now and she has been excellent. I feel like I am heard and understood even when I have a hard time expressing things myself and putting thoughts into words. Having someone who can actually listen and provide the resources to assist myself with past trauma and current challenges has been a life changer.

This is prior to being seen so this is strictly based on first impressions upon entering the building. The waiting area is nice but undefined as to where one should go nor any indications as to what is needed to be done. No one was there to greet us nor was there any desk or window to suggest someone would. We looked for the therapist's office but no doors had any identification to point us in the right direction. At this point we're at the mercy of the clock alerting the therapist to seek us out in the waiting area in order to be seen. Not the best first impression. I will update this review if and when we are seen.
