What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

The go-to approach for helping people in dialectical behavior is helping clients understand how thoughts affect emotions and behaviors. Mindfulness, which has its roots in Eastern meditation, as a daily practice is very effective in “being in the moment.”

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) techniques are especially useful for people who experience emotions very intensely. In addition to mindfulness, DBT teaches distress tolerance, which is the ability to manage emotional distress in the moment by using techniques like distraction.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

Clients with a significant history of intense emotional dysregulation are making meaningful progress in therapy if they no longer need the safety and containment of a psychiatric hospital. Some clients will report an improvement in interpersonal relationships.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in dialectical behavior therapy by making the practice of mindfulness an everyday activity and utilizing specific homework assignments tailored to their particular needs.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

Before a client is seen individually, it is recommended that they learn the basics of DBT in a partial-hospitalization setting or at an intensive outpatient program in a group setting.
