Starting Grief & loss counseling

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in Round Rock, TX have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Round Rock, TX will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

Need more help deciding?

Grief counseling is a form of psychotherapy for people who are grieving – it helps them cope with mental, emotional, and even physical responses to difficult losses. Grief therapists can support those who have lost a loved one or experienced another significant loss such as the loss of a job.

If grief counseling sounds like something you could benefit from, consider scheduling a session. Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Round Rock has grief counselors who will support you throughout your unique grieving process and provide you with healthy coping tools for your unique symptoms of grief. You can schedule an online or in-person grief counseling session with us today.

Do I Need Grief Therapy?

Grief and loss therapy can benefit anyone who has undergone a tough loss, which is, unfortunately, a universal experience. If you’ve experienced any of the following, you can find help and support in grief counseling:

  • The death of a loved one (person or pet)
  • Divorce or separation
  • Loss of your job
  • Loss of your home
  • Diagnosis of a terminal illness or life-altering condition

Signs You Could Benefit from Grief Counseling

In addition to experiencing a difficult loss, here are a few signs that you might need grief therapy:

  • You can’t or don’t know how to move forward.

Grief after loss can look different from one person to the next – some people feel frozen in time. They can’t think about anything but the loved one or thing lost. They might even feel like their life is over or might as well be over. If this describes you, consider talking to a professional. They can help you process your grief and begin to move on with your life.

  • Your grief interferes with work or other important areas of life.

If your grief is negatively affecting your work (i.e., you can’t focus and you aren’t meeting your deadlines, as a result) or your personal relationships (i.e., you keep canceling on your friends because you have no desire to leave the house), it’s wise to start grief counseling. A grief counselor can offer coping tools that will enable you to better process your loss and show up in the important areas of your life.

  • You feel depressed, as a result of the loss.

Grief can turn into depression. If you experience symptoms of depression — like loss of interest in your hobbies, feelings of guilt, difficulty sleeping, and low self-esteem — it’s important to talk to a professional. They can help you manage these thoughts/feelings and offer the support you need to process your loss in a healthy way. In addition, if you do develop a depressive disorder, they can treat your depression or refer you to another counselor who can offer treatment for your depression.

How Does Grief Therapy Work?

Grief counseling helps individuals work through their specific response to loss. Whether you’re feeling extremely sad, experiencing anger, struggling with guilt, or feeling numb, a grief counselor can offer the guidance and support you need to come to terms with your loss and move forward with your life. There are common topics covered in grief therapy sessions for those who have lost a loved one, accompanied by common grief therapy techniques:

  • Your emotions and how you’re expressing/coping with them.
  • The status of your relationships and views on relationships.
  • Your identity.

I have been working with Dr. Covey for almost 6 months now and she has been excellent. I feel like I am heard and understood even when I have a hard time expressing things myself and putting thoughts into words. Having someone who can actually listen and provide the resources to assist myself with past trauma and current challenges has been a life changer.

This is prior to being seen so this is strictly based on first impressions upon entering the building. The waiting area is nice but undefined as to where one should go nor any indications as to what is needed to be done. No one was there to greet us nor was there any desk or window to suggest someone would. We looked for the therapist's office but no doors had any identification to point us in the right direction. At this point we're at the mercy of the clock alerting the therapist to seek us out in the waiting area in order to be seen. Not the best first impression. I will update this review if and when we are seen.
