What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

Leeann: As a licensed professional counselor (LPC), my go-to approach for treating anxiety is through a person-centered approach while using tools from other theories to help establish an ability to live the life you want. As a therapist, I find the best benefit in meeting you where you are, learning about what you have tried in the past (what has worked and what didn't), where you are in the here and now, and where you would like to be in the future.

Holly: My go-to approach for treating anxiety is CBT. I feel like it has the best benefit in treating anxiety because clients identify the triggers of the anxiety and the subsequent behaviors that follow when they are anxious.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

Leeann: As a counselor, I teach the following tools: self-awareness, thought-stopping, reframing thoughts, redirecting thoughts, various coping skills (mindfulness techniques, visualization, and grounding in the here and now), boundary setting, goal setting, etc.

Holly: I teach the following tools when treating anxiety: identifying and utilizing various coping skills such as breathing, grounding, and relaxation techniques. I also assist clients with setting healthier boundaries in their lives.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

Leeann: As an LPC, I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they are having reduced symptoms, meeting their goals, and/or verbalizing a different experience for themselves.

Holly: I know a client is making meaningful progress when treating anxiety by the reduction of anxious episodes in between sessions, better sleep by the client, and fewer angry outbursts.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Leeann: Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy by continuing to work on the techniques practiced during sessions, completing their homework/assignments/projects between sessions, reading, writing, etc.

Holly: Clients can supplement their time in therapy for anxiety with journaling to better express those thoughts and feelings that are constantly bouncing around in their minds.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

Leeann: To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can reflect on why you are seeking help, write a list of medications you are prescribed with dosages, bring it with you, etc.

Holly: To prepare for your first therapy session for anxiety, you can make a list of the anxious thoughts that you have been experiencing along with any panic attacks and those triggers.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Roanoke, VA can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Roanoke therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Roanoke Counseling for Anxiety, Worry, & Stress

Anxiety and fear are common and affect more people than you may expect. However, we often have difficulty discerning between the two. Fear is generally a response to a real or perceived threat and is usually tied to something very specific. On the other hand, anxiety is typically characterized by the general feeling of continual worry or stress, and it’s usually difficult to pinpoint the source of this worry or anxiety on your own. Not only is anxiety common, but it’s normal. Almost everyone experiences anxiety at some point in their lives, but it is when anxiety becomes a constant presence in your life that it translates into a serious problem.

If you are suffering as a result of anxiety, reach out to Thriveworks Roanoke today to schedule an anxiety therapy appointment. We offer evening and weekend sessions, accept most major insurances, provide same-week appointments, and more.

I had the pleasure of working with Chris in a professional capacity for 6 years, during which time he provided individual counseling for a number of children that I referred to him. Chris always demonstrated a sincere empathetic sensibility in his relationship with his clientele. He is keenly adept at providing the skills and guidance that allows others to pursue a self-actualizing understanding and awareness of themselves. He is a superb counselor.
