What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is CBT and EMDR. I find the best benefit in both of these methods because they allow the client to address thoughts and feelings related to trauma in a logical way. With the use of EMDR, I can address underlying thoughts and feelings that have been repressed but continue to negatively impact one's overall thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach the following tools in PTSD/trauma therapy:

  • Tapping
  • Solution-focused brief therapy
  • Cognitive processing
  • Development of coping skills, such as journaling and meditation
  • The use of mindfulness
  • Development of a safe place

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when there is a reduction in the raw emotion that comes up when they are talking about traumatic experiences, or when the client has removed the feelings of guilt and stops feeling like they are at fault.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy with the development of effective coping and calming skills, as well as actively engaging in physical and social supportive activities.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for their first PTSD/trauma therapy session, someone can jot down all of the emotional challenges they continue to experience from the past trauma, as well as keep a record of triggers and experiences they have that lead to experiencing PTSD/trauma symptoms.

Symptoms of PTSD

The symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can vary but often include:

  • Flashbacks and distressing memories of the traumatic event
  • Nightmares and sleep disturbances
  • Intense anxiety and irritability
  • Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
  • Negative changes in mood and thought patterns
  • Increased arousal, like difficulty concentrating or exaggerated startle response

How do you overcome PTSD triggers?

The best way to overcome PTSD triggers is to seek the assistance of a professional therapist, such as those at Thriveworks, who can help you to understand and treat your PTSD triggers.

What type of therapist is best for PTSD?

In most cases, a therapist who specializes in Trauma/PTSD therapy is the best type of mental health professional to address the symptoms of PTSD.

Is PTSD/trauma therapy conducted in person or online?

PTSD/trauma therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long should you go to therapy for PTSD?

If a client is working through a single traumatic event that occurred as an adult, trauma or PTSD therapy may only take a few months, but in general, it can take a year or more to effectively treat trauma symptoms and PTSD. The duration of treatment is highly dependent on the client and the severity of their symptoms.

How successful is therapy for PTSD?

The success rate of therapy for PTSD depends entirely on the individual’s symptoms, commitment to attending sessions, and personal abilities.

I am a Certified Peer Support Specialist with Horizon Behavioral Health in Lynchburg, VA and I have known Ashley as a helpful and supportive Clinician. Ashley was always available for clients and co-workers, and she has always been friendly, empathic, and willing to go the "extra mile". I wish Ashley all the best in her new position and I am sure she will be an asset to Thriveworks. Please feel free to contact me anytime via my email. Best regards, Günter Gensbygel

It was my esteemed pleasure to have worked with Ashley Groeper at Liberty University where she touched the hearts and minds of countless individuals. As a former colleague, I witnessed firsthand her unrelenting dedication and compassion for the plight of anyone in need. Ashley creatively applied her impressive intellect in search of effective and innovative ways to serve the needs of others and the community at large. Even in the rare occasions when an answer eluded her, she simply would not stop searching until she found it! I am fully persuaded that Ashley's positive outlook and intense desire to help people become the best version of themselves will allow her to partner with her clients in engaging ways. This will not only provide them with a trustworthy confidante, knowledge, and resources, but will also empower them with the confidence to be excited about their future and to become change agents in their own destiny! If you are looking for a competant professional counselor who will give you the respect and dignity you deserve, listen without judgment, someone who will never sacrifice quality for quantity, and has an unwavering commitment to helping you make sense out of life again, you will have found all that and more in Ashley Groeper!
