What is your go-to approach in sessions?

My go-to approach for helping people in our medication check-ins involves assessing whether the medications are effectively targeting the symptoms for which they were prescribed. I engage in shared decision-making with clients to discuss their treatment goals, preferences, and any concerns they may have about their medications, empowering clients to take an active role in their treatment plan and promote adherence.

What is your typical approach to prescribing medications?

My typical approach to prescribing medication is to ""start slow, go slow."" I often begin with low doses and gradually titrate upward as tolerated to minimize the risk of adverse effects. This cautious approach allows for close monitoring of the client's response and helps optimize therapeutic benefits while minimizing side effects. I also implement a structured plan for monitoring the client's response to medication, including regular follow-up appointments to assess efficacy, tolerability, and safety, allowing for timely adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.

Do you teach clients any therapeutic tools in sessions?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in our sessions when there is a reduction in the severity and frequency of psychiatric symptoms. Progress may also be reflected in the client's ability to engage in daily activities, fulfill responsibilities, and participate in meaningful social interactions. Clients may report improvements in mood, anxiety levels, sleep patterns, increased energy levels, motivation, productivity, and a greater sense of enjoyment in life. Improvement in the client's overall quality of life is a key indicator of progress, which may involve enhancements in various domains such as physical health, relationships, employment or education, leisure activities, and overall satisfaction with life.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement psychiatric treatment?

Clients typically benefit from incorporating a variety of activities into their personal time that promote self-care, social connection, creativity, personal growth, and overall well-being. These include:

  • Self-care practices such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, or progressive muscle relaxation to reduce stress and enhance relaxation.
  • Regular exercise such as walking, jogging, swimming, dancing, or participating in sports based on their interests and physical abilities.
  • Pursuing hobbies and activities that they enjoy and find fulfilling.
  • Healthy lifestyle habits that support their overall well-being, including maintaining a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, limiting alcohol and substance use, and avoiding tobacco.
  • Fostering connections with friends, family members, support groups, or peer networks.

What should someone do to prepare for starting psychiatric care?

To prepare for your first psychiatry session, you can bring any relevant medical records, psychiatric history, and current medication lists to the appointment. Take some time to reflect on your symptoms, including the nature, severity, and duration of any psychiatric symptoms you've been experiencing. Note any triggers or patterns associated with your symptoms and how they have impacted your daily life. Identify what you hope to achieve through psychiatric treatment and what specific goals you would like to work towards. Lastly, write down any questions or concerns you have about your mental health, treatment options, or the therapeutic process. This preparation can help ensure that all of your questions are addressed during the session.

I have been working with Dr. Covey for almost 6 months now and she has been excellent. I feel like I am heard and understood even when I have a hard time expressing things myself and putting thoughts into words. Having someone who can actually listen and provide the resources to assist myself with past trauma and current challenges has been a life changer.

This is prior to being seen so this is strictly based on first impressions upon entering the building. The waiting area is nice but undefined as to where one should go nor any indications as to what is needed to be done. No one was there to greet us nor was there any desk or window to suggest someone would. We looked for the therapist's office but no doors had any identification to point us in the right direction. At this point we're at the mercy of the clock alerting the therapist to seek us out in the waiting area in order to be seen. Not the best first impression. I will update this review if and when we are seen.
