What Mental Disorders Can Psychiatrists Treat?

Psychiatric providers treat various mental health issues and disorders that greatly disturb a person’s mood, behavior, or thinking and negatively affect a person’s daily life and quality of living.

We all have bad days from time to time, and we also experience grief and loss. Our reactions to these experiences, whatever they may be, are normal. However, if symptoms don’t get better for an extended period of time, it might be a good idea to seek an experienced and compassionate psychiatric provider’s professional assistance.

Here are just a few mental disorders and behaviors a psychiatric provider can help treat:

  1. Depression: this disorder varies in intensity; however, moderate depression has two main symptoms – persistent low mood and a decreased interest in everyday activities. In addition, individuals with depression also may experience despair, guilt, low self-esteem, difficulty sleeping, and fatigue. The National Center for Health Statistics says that 4.7% of U.S. adults aged 18 and over report regular feelings of depression. Women are about twice as likely to experience depression as men, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  2. Addictive Behaviors: these behaviors include familiar addictions such as alcohol, smoking,  prescription medications, food, and gambling. It can also include additions to shopping, sex, the internet, plastic surgery, and self-injury. Any of these addictive behaviors can have negative impacts on an individual’s daily functioning and relationships.
  3. Anxiety: anxiety disorders are serious mental issues that can cause a person to worry or fear so much that it tends to be a constant problem and strains an individual’s ability to carry out everyday activities at home, work, school, and within social circles. A variety of factors can contribute to anxiety, such as our environment, genetics, brain changes, trauma, and the amount of stress we carry. Like depression, anxiety is prevalent, and both are treatable with the assistance of a psychiatrist or another psychiatric provider.

What Does Treatment Look Like?

Every client will have different needs, so there is no standard treatment for mental disorders. Even people with the same diagnosis will have different experiences, needs, and goals for treatment.

Your psychiatric provider will want to first meet with you and have a chance to hear about your symptoms, medical history, and any other experiences or events that may play a role in how you think and feel.

A treatment plan may involve psychotherapy (also known as talk therapy), medication, and relaxation or mindfulness exercises a client can work on outside of counseling sessions. A course of treatment may involve cognitive behavioral therapy where the client explores his or her past experiences, relationships, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and learns how new, constructive ways of thinking will produce healthier behaviors and beliefs.

I looked around for a therapist for a month or so I found this place and I read and reread the reviews and Lauren’s bio a few times When I finally called a few months ago the woman who took my information and answered my questions, I specifically asked if I needed a new letter for my emotional support dog would they be able to help. She assured me absolutely yes. We do it all the time Now a few months into my sessions I asked Lauren for a letter to give my landlord. Lauren informed me over 3 weeks ago she would ask her boss. 2 weeks later she told me no, her boss said no. I had to go online. A year ago my landlord did not like the online one and wanted it from a local Therapist This past week when I had my appointment with Lauren, she said she couldn’t, i asked what kind of therapist she was. Because I was told when I decided to come to your practice that I could get one, I was told I had to have a few sessions with the therapist Now on Tuesday 2/13 I asked, she told me she was meeting with her boss the next day and would tell him what I was told She said she would email me the next day, now it’s Saturday and nothing. I now am so upset that I put all this time into a therapist that isn’t qualified to write a letter, not because of her, but from some rule that I was lied to about on the onset Now I really think I need to go find a true therapist The fact I’m told to go online to get one from a stranger, while I am in therapy Makes me question your practice In sales we call it bait and switch

I am pleased to have someone I can tell how I am feeling that I would not express to family or friends. The medication helps me to get a better night sleep and helps me feel better the following days and to cope throughout the days that follow.
