What is your go-to approach in sessions?

When my client's follow up with me I want to know how they have been doing since the last time we met and if there were any changes. My approach is to be available as a psychiatric resource. We are living in a technological time where consumers have access to fast information but that information still has to be analyzed and applied. I enjoy helping people see things clearly and manage more simply.

What is your typical approach to prescribing medications?

I take a more holistic approach when it comes to prescribing medications because there are so many influences that can impact a person's mental health. I include my client in on the decision making process when prescribing medication. I find when my client's know the answer to the question “why should I take this medication?” They feel more in control which helps them get on the path to feeling better.

Do you teach clients any therapeutic tools in sessions?

I know the client is making progress when they appear happier, are eating and sleeping better, their social interactions are improving, and they are getting on with pursuing their personal goals.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement psychiatric treatment?

Client's usually benefit from improving on their diet, incorporating some type of exercise routine pattern, and engaging in a hobby.

What should someone do to prepare for starting psychiatric care?

To prepare for your first psychiatric session put together a list of any previous mental health diagnosis you may have received in the past, as well as, medications previously prescribed. If available know your family history of any mental health diagnosis. Be up to date with your primary care provider wellness check. The rest is going to be easy.

What Will My Psychiatric Treatment Involve?

When you start working with a psychiatrist, they’ll begin by assessing your mental health from a scientific approach. There are many factors your psychiatrist will take into consideration as they are contemplating a diagnosis and treatment plan, including your personality, emotional state, past experiences, family history, and environment.

Once other medical concerns have been ruled out and a diagnosis has been reached, you can expect your psychiatrist to create a personalized treatment plan to overcome and resolve whatever mental health issues you may be facing. Your treatment plan may include a combination of different forms of therapy, prescription medication, lifestyle adjustments, and other therapeutic techniques. These techniques might include home practices like meditation that can help control your symptoms and prevent relapses.

Talisha Harrison helped me by giving me the tools to help me navigate some difficult relationships. I also appreciate how kind, sensitive, and empathetic she was as I have been grieving a recent loss of a parent. I have also been recovering from a serious medical condition. Should I feel the need to seek counseling in the future, I would not hesitate to return to counseling with Talisha.

So far it's OK. I say ok because there is a big age difference between the therapist and myself. Maybe by 25yrs or so.

My therapist is Lesley Petersen and I have been a patient of hers for about four months now. She has been helping me through a stressful situation that I have been going through. I would recommend her because she is easy to talk to and non-judgmental.
