What is your go-to approach for teen counseling?

My go-to approach when working with teenagers is to put them in the driver's seat of their sessions. Some might find it difficult to get teenagers to engage in counseling, but I love working with teenagers because they have so much to say! When teenagers can have a supportive, nonjudgemental space to process feelings, learn new skills, and explore their values as they transition to adulthood, I believe it gives them the resilience to face all of the challenges that come with that transition!

What tools do you teach in teen counseling?

In teen counseling, I enjoy helping teens learn strategies such as:

  • Identifying thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations in the body associated with different emotions
  • Building a “coping strategy toolbox” to be built with the honest feedback of the teen in order to give them sustainable, accessible, and effective ways of coping
  • Communication skills to encourage teens to ask for support
  • Decision-making processes to help teens identify goals, boundaries, and expectations

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in teen counseling?

I know a teen is making meaningful progress in counseling when they share experiences of self-validation, empathy, and mindfulness for others' experiences, and share times when they were able to understand their symptoms and find a coping strategy to apply towards them.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement teen counseling?

Teens can make the most of what they learn in counseling by having some way to document their progress and experiences, whether it's a dedicated journal or something as quick as the notes app on their phone! Having a go-to “coping strategy kit” that's accessible can also help them feel prepared. In the world of social media, teens also have great access to different resources and supports that validate their experiences and make them feel less alone. It can encourage and motivate teens to continue to work towards their goals.

What should someone do to prepare for starting teen counseling?

To prepare for counseling, teens can identify two or three areas where they want to see changes or improvements. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions! An ongoing dialogue is one of the most valuable things to help a clinician understand you and help you work towards your goals.

Starting Teen counseling

What is teen counseling?

Teen counseling helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst teens include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problematic relationships with food.

How does teen counseling work?

Teen counseling works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the teen’s unique needs — based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks teen therapists in Providence have the expertise and experience to help young individuals at their level.

Does my teen need therapy?

Signs that teens might need Teen counseling can be very subjective, as they are experiencing many changes and can have intense reactions to them. As parents, you know your child best and are best equipped to judge whether certain reactions are standard behaviors for your teen or whether they might be hinting at a larger problem. Even so, there are a few common signs and events that often point to a need for therapy, such as experiencing divorce or loss, grief, consistent low moods, teens distancing themselves and becoming isolated, losing interest in hobbies, excessive anger or irritability, substance use issues, and suicidal ideation, among others.

Is teen counseling conducted in person or online?

Teen counseling providers at Thriveworks in Providence, RI offer both in person and online therapy by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does teen counseling last?

The length of teen counseling depends on your teen’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, teen counseling sessions will last for several months.

Vivian provides a welcoming conversational space for exchange. She is able to listen with genuine care and when the time is right give feedback that is both empathetic and constructive. If I have to share a problem with her that might be difficult to share with even a close friend, I feel she is able to help coach me along with a patient reassurance that my thoughts and feelings will be considered without judgment. There may not always be a direct or immediate answer to what I’m working through but she is able to encourage healthy thought-habits and emotional strategies which help me to progress. I really appreciate her respectful frame of mind and down-to-earth personality, they make talking with her worthwhile.
