What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My go-to approach for treating anxiety involves interpersonal psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Interpersonal psychotherapy encourages the client to examine how they are interacting with and perceiving real-life stressors, often linking these perceptions to historical events or traumas in their life. Coupling this technique with CBT further encourages the client to build off these deeper and meaningful connections, start to “think about their thinking,” and identify automatic thought patterns that contribute to behaviors they may find problematic in their day-to-day life.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

One skill that I encourage my clients to focus on throughout therapy when addressing anxiety is “thought catching” and putting your “thoughts on trial.” Many clients struggle with automatic negative thoughts that are not grounded in a more realistic perspective of an anxiety-inducing situation, causing feelings of panic and intense discomfort. By taking inventory of automatic negative thoughts and assessing them with curiosity as well as compassion, clients can begin to change the structure of how they think about anxiety-provoking situations and implement tools to better navigate these situations.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I see clients making meaningful progress when they reflect and share in session moments where they were able to catch themselves about to repeat or engage in an unhealthy and unhelpful thought or behavioral pattern. They catch themselves and decide to make a change and utilize skills discussed and explored in therapy, receiving a different outcome.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy with journaling and incorporate time into their daily lives where they slow down and give themselves a few moments each day to take inventory of how they are feeling.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

Clients who want to address feelings of anxiety in therapy should think about the anxiety-based thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that they want to see adjusted. Clients who experience the most success in therapy when addressing anxiety recognize that the goal is not to get rid of anxiety but to change our relationship to it.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Providence, RI can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Providence therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Causes and Types of Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety can be complicated but at its core, there are two causes: environmental and biological. You can inherit anxiety from your partner, anxiety can essentially be taught to you by watching the behavior of others, or both could be responsible. Some studies have shown that anxious parents lead to anxious children but it’s not entirely clear how much the environment and how much the biological aspects affect this outcome.

  2. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): This is another common form of anxiety that many people are familiar with. If you need a reminder, OCD is characterized by unhealthy thoughts and compulsions.

Vivian provides a welcoming conversational space for exchange. She is able to listen with genuine care and when the time is right give feedback that is both empathetic and constructive. If I have to share a problem with her that might be difficult to share with even a close friend, I feel she is able to help coach me along with a patient reassurance that my thoughts and feelings will be considered without judgment. There may not always be a direct or immediate answer to what I’m working through but she is able to encourage healthy thought-habits and emotional strategies which help me to progress. I really appreciate her respectful frame of mind and down-to-earth personality, they make talking with her worthwhile.
