Hear from our clinicians

What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Barbara: My go-to approach for helping people in online counseling is collaborative therapy. I prefer collaborative therapy because it provides the context of each client being the expert in their lives and actively working with me, the therapist, who has expertise in psychology. Additionally, with online counseling there can be additional comfort in your own home and allow flexibility that make it feel more like a collaboration rather than a clinical appointment.

Molly Maureen: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is the same as in-person therapy. I start where they are, meaning what prompted them to come to therapy and what is weighing on them the most. My style is eclectic, so I prefer to adapt my methods to meet their needs, and this changes as therapy progresses. This allows for continued progress as the client's needs change.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Barbara: I teach the following tools in online counseling:

  • breathing techniques (square breathing, breath work)
  • mindfulness/present focus
  • grounding techniques (five senses, physical sensations, fidget/focus object, muscle relaxation)
  • journaling (freeform, bullet, prompts, daily success/struggle)
  • socratic questioning (cognitive challenging and rationalization of thoughts)
  • reframing (perspective shift and broadening mindset)
  • self-care skills (awareness of importance of basic needs)

Molly Maureen: These are some of the tools or coping skills that I teach in online therapy:

  • Problem-solving: looking at your situation to identify what you CAN do for yourself instead of only seeing the problem.
  • Mindfulness: techniques that increase your awareness and help you focus on being present in the moment and connecting with your thoughts and feelings.
  • Grounding exercises: part of mindfulness often used to cope with feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
  • Communication skills: learning to express your thoughts and emotions appropriately to yourself and others; this includes listening skills.
  • Relaxation techniques: used to reduce stress, anxiety, and other symptoms as well as for self-care.
  • Stress management techniques including self-care.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Barbara: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online counseling when they begin to notice their perspective shift and highlight their own empowerment, have increased awareness of their triggers, and actively acknowledge their basic needs. Additionally, the goals that we set will have a frequency that we will work towards, for example increasing self-care skills or decreasing symptoms. I always like to preface that progress is not linear and will be an ongoing tool during treatment to challenge negative perceptions of self.

Molly Maureen: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they report using skills that they learned in therapy successfully. Anytime someone reports that therapy is helping them feel better, that is progress. When someone is able to incorporate new coping skills into daily life and see their own progress that is meaningful. Even small positive changes to your perspective and behaviors will have a significant and meaningful impact in your life.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Barbara: Clients can supplement their time in online counseling by utilizing their network of supports and relationships, create physical activity routine to enhance self-care, seek resources on their specific struggles, journaling about emotion cycles and seeking out additional resources such as group therapy.

Molly Maureen: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by reading articles or books to increase their knowledge and understanding. I often make suggestions or send links to articles that are specific to their needs or concerns. If you find information on your own, it is always a good idea to ask your therapist to confirm that the information is accurate, especially for information found on social media or online videos.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Barbara: To prepare for your first online counseling session, you can create a space in your home that feels comfortable, private and separate from those you are living with at the time. It is very helpful to create boundaries around your time in therapy and to make this space your own and part of the routine.

Molly Maureen: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can plan to be sitting in a private space, preferably at home, so you will feel comfortable discussing your concerns. If there is anyone else in your home at the time, ask them not to disturb you for the duration of the session. Make a list of questions and/or concerns. Have a list of any medications that you are taking (prescription, OTC, and supplements). Have a list of prior mental health treatments with dates and names if possible. But most of all, be kind to yourself and allow yourself to be open to the idea of exploring your thoughts and emotions.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

We all have problems. Some are small, which we learn to manage; others are large, which we struggle to get a handle on. These problems (big and small) include stress at work, fights with friends and family, financial strain, disagreements with coworkers, anxious thoughts and feelings, bouts of depression, breakups, and so on. In any case, regardless of what the specific problem is, it’s okay to reach out for help in dealing with it.

Even those of us who can acknowledge that asking for mental health help is okay struggle to actually do it. Why? A big reason is that we don’t want or don’t have time to go to a counseling office. We’d rather not carve out a chunk of our day to drive to the local office, sit in the therapy room for 60-90 minutes, and then drive back home. Or, we don’t have the opportunity to—the local counseling office is booked or doesn’t have counselors with the right specialties. Fortunately, there is a solution to all of these roadblocks: online counseling.

“Just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you doesn’t mean you can, should, or need to do it alone.” –Lisa Olivera

Online counseling enables individuals to work with a mental health counselor from the convenience of home. Or, if one needs or prefers to attend their counseling session from their car, the local coffee shop, or elsewhere, they can! As long as he or she has internet access or cell service and access to a device that enables them to join their appointment by phone or video, they can receive online counseling at Thriveworks Pittsburgh, PA. To schedule an appointment with one of our online counselors, simply give our office a call.

What Are the Advantages of Online Counseling?

Online counseling improves access to mental health services and also serves as a great option for those who would prefer to meet with their counselor from home. There are a few main mediums for which online counseling is done, including over the phone and via video. If you decide to pursue telephone counseling at Thriveworks Pittsburgh, PA, you will simply answer your counselor’s phone call at the time of your session. If you choose to pursue video counseling at Thriveworks Pittsburgh, PA, you’ll be sent an easy-to-navigate video link which you will click at the time of your appointment to join your session.

If you’re debating between in-person counseling and online counseling, consider the following advantages of online counseling, which many clients boast of:

  1. Optimal convenience: First, as we mentioned, online counseling offers a more convenient counseling option. You can literally attend your session from wherever you please (again, as long as you check the boxes we mentioned earlier). You don’t have to worry about shuffling around your schedule to factor in commute times.
  2. Total comfort (physically and mentally): Convenience goes hand in hand with convenience. Online counseling enables you to attend your counseling session completely comfortable, both physically and mentally. Many people find that opening up to their counseling via an online medium is much easier than it is to do in-person. They feel mentally and emotionally safer, which enables them to make great progress in counseling.
  3. Flexible scheduling: On top of convenience and comfort, online counseling at Thriveworks Pittsburgh comes with even more flexibility than our in-person counseling options! Often, providers are able to offer more hours in online counseling, including session options in the evenings and on the weekends.

If these online counseling benefits have piqued your interest, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Pittsburgh to schedule your appointment or hear more. Our scheduling team is here to help or to answer any questions you might have!

I looked around for a therapist for a month or so I found this place and I read and reread the reviews and Lauren’s bio a few times When I finally called a few months ago the woman who took my information and answered my questions, I specifically asked if I needed a new letter for my emotional support dog would they be able to help. She assured me absolutely yes. We do it all the time Now a few months into my sessions I asked Lauren for a letter to give my landlord. Lauren informed me over 3 weeks ago she would ask her boss. 2 weeks later she told me no, her boss said no. I had to go online. A year ago my landlord did not like the online one and wanted it from a local Therapist This past week when I had my appointment with Lauren, she said she couldn’t, i asked what kind of therapist she was. Because I was told when I decided to come to your practice that I could get one, I was told I had to have a few sessions with the therapist Now on Tuesday 2/13 I asked, she told me she was meeting with her boss the next day and would tell him what I was told She said she would email me the next day, now it’s Saturday and nothing. I now am so upset that I put all this time into a therapist that isn’t qualified to write a letter, not because of her, but from some rule that I was lied to about on the onset Now I really think I need to go find a true therapist The fact I’m told to go online to get one from a stranger, while I am in therapy Makes me question your practice In sales we call it bait and switch

I am pleased to have someone I can tell how I am feeling that I would not express to family or friends. The medication helps me to get a better night sleep and helps me feel better the following days and to cope throughout the days that follow.
