What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

I base my couple's counseling work on Gottman's research, as we can predict with 93% accuracy whether partners will divorce/split up based on four factors.

My go-to approach for helping people in couples counseling is to work on improving communication. I find that most problems in relationships can be greatly improved with more effective communication skills.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I provide teaching on Gottman's well-researched factors most predictive of breakups and their antidotes.

I teach the following tools in couples counseling:

  • Mindfulness: gaining greater awareness of your thoughts and feelings
  • Assertive communication: learning how to express what you are thinking and feeling without hurting your partner
  • Active listening skills: learning how to really hear what your partner is trying to tell you
  • Developing curiosity about your partner: learning how to ask effective, clarifying questions rather than making assumptions

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making progress in couples/marriage counseling when they report increased relational satisfaction (in-session rating scale) and show returning trust & joy in their relationship.

I know clients are making meaningful progress in couples counseling when they share that they are spending more quality time together and feel a greater sense of love and trust between them.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling with on-topic videos, readings, and relational exercises I will recommend.

Clients can supplement their time in couples counseling by spending time outside of their therapy sessions practicing the skills they learn in sessions. Additionally, they can read books, listen to podcasts, and find resources online about relationships.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can start building a list of what is and is not working in the relationship, and please include a list of relational goals.

To prepare for your first couples counseling session, you can ensure that both partners have signed the consent for treatment forms and that Zoom is set up on your computer or phone. You and your partner can also discuss your relationship goals in order to have a clear view of what you hope to accomplish in couples counseling.

Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Marie for years. Her work with her clients is unparalleled. She is clinically exceptional, while somehow maintaining an authenticity that makes working with her in any capacity a wonderfully positive experience. I would recommend Marie to anyone who is serious about helping themselves, and particularly those with a history of trauma.
