What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I prefer this approach because it is highly structured, evidence-based, and focused on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviors. In CBT, I work collaboratively with clients to understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By teaching clients specific skills and techniques, such as cognitive restructuring and behavior modification, they can learn to challenge and change unhelpful beliefs and develop healthier coping strategies.I find that CBT is effective in addressing a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, and trauma-related symptoms. It provides clients with practical tools they can use both during therapy sessions and in their daily lives to manage distressing symptoms and improve overall well-being.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Cognitive restructuring: This involves identifying and challenging negative or distorted thoughts and replacing them with more balanced and realistic ones. Clients learn to recognize cognitive distortions, such as black-and-white thinking or catastrophizing, and develop skills to reframe their thinking patterns.
  • Mindfulness practices: Mindfulness techniques help clients cultivate present-moment awareness and nonjudgmental acceptance of their thoughts, feelings, and sensations. This can include guided mindfulness meditations, deep breathing exercises, or body scans to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
  • Behavioral activation: This involves scheduling and engaging in activities that bring pleasure or a sense of accomplishment, even when feeling low or unmotivated. Clients learn to break the cycle of avoidance and withdrawal by gradually reintroducing enjoyable and fulfilling activities into their daily routines.
  • Relaxation techniques: These include progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, or diaphragmatic breathing exercises to promote physical and emotional relaxation. Clients learn to recognize signs of tension and stress in their bodies and practice techniques to induce a state of calmness and relaxation.
  • Communication skills training: This focuses on improving interpersonal communication and assertiveness skills to enhance relationships and resolve conflicts effectively. Clients learn techniques for active listening, expressing thoughts and feelings assertively, and setting boundaries in relationships.
  • Problem-solving strategies: Clients learn a structured approach to problem-solving, including defining the problem, generating potential solutions, evaluating the pros and cons of each option, implementing a plan, and reviewing the outcomes. This helps clients feel more empowered and capable of addressing challenges in their lives.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they experience positive changes in their symptoms or functioning. This could include a reduction in the intensity or frequency of distressing symptoms, such as anxiety or depression, improvements in interpersonal relationships, or enhanced ability to cope with stressors.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy with journaling, practicing relaxation techniques, engaging in hobbies and leisure activities, and practicing self-care.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can:

  • Reflect on your goals: Take some time to consider what you hope to achieve through therapy. Reflect on the challenges you're facing, the changes you'd like to make, and the specific goals you'd like to work toward. This can help guide discussions and ensure that your therapy sessions are focused and productive.
  • Be open-minded: Approach therapy with an open mind and a willingness to explore new perspectives, insights, and strategies. Keep in mind that therapy is a collaborative process!
  • Consider your preferences: Think about your preferences and needs when it comes to therapy logistics, such as the frequency of sessions, the format, and any specific accommodations you may require. Communicate these preferences to ensure that your therapy experience is comfortable and accessible for you.

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Yeah, therapy is subjective so it's hard to rate a company based on one therapist encounter but I do have to include the company overall because it's essential to my comprehensive review. My therapist tried, was friendly and accommodating but just didn't work for me. The company overall is disjointed and maybe a little too big for proper management. You call a central number to get set up but when it comes to quitting the therapist it is up to you as the patient to do it all. Any attempt to log into the site gets redirected to an email link. The latest CSR I had unfortunately had a thick accent and was not really listening to me and my responses.

Hi I was a prior supervisor for Margaret in California where she did her post degree internship. She was a very skilled clinician who had many kids that were high-risk and lived in low-income families. Her relationship and interactive approach was very successful with these children and families. I was impressed with her skill and abilities. I would highly recommend her. Vicci
