Starting Trauma therapy

What is trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on treating the psychological impact of traumatic events on individuals. Trauma therapy helps people process and heal from their trauma by guiding them through their trauma in a compassionate and supportive way, allowing clients to feel the full scope of what happened to them and eventually move on from the event(s). This process helps people who have experienced trauma find ways to feel safe in their lives.

How does trauma therapy work?

Trauma therapy will often require individuals to walk through their experiences in a controlled and compassionate setting (unless the client has a dissociative disorder) so that they can fully process the event, an activity that will allow them to move on from what happened and feel safe again. Thriveworks Royal Oak therapists will also help clients learn healthy coping mechanisms to deal with their symptoms outside of therapy.

Is trauma therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks trauma counseling in Royal Oak, MI is conducted both in person and online through online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does trauma therapy last?

If an individual is working through a single event that occurred during adulthood, they may only need a few months of treatment. However, in instances of childhood trauma or repeated traumatic events, therapy may continue over the course of years. Trauma therapy usually ends when the client believes they have met their therapeutic goals, however long that takes to occur. Thriveworks therapists in Royal Oak, MI will continue to provide care for as long as necessary to help clients meet their therapeutic needs.

PTSD Counseling and Trauma Therapy in Oakland County, MI—Therapists and Psychologists

PTSD results from distressing traumatic events. It is a mental illness that many people associate with war veterans, but these aren’t the only individuals who suffer from PTSD. For example, victims of domestic abuse, policemen, firefighters, and those diagnosed with a life-threatening illness are at a heightened risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder—the common thread being one’s exposure to a psychologically disturbing event.

If you have been exposed to a traumatic event, it’s incredibly important that you work with a trauma therapist to manage any PTSD symptoms you might have and heal from the disturbing experience. Trauma therapists and PTSD counselors specialize in helping victims of trauma, and they can guide you on the right path of recovery. If you are in Royal Oak or the Oakland area, and you’re looking for trauma therapy, consider working with a trauma therapist at Thriveworks Oakland. If you are haunted by a past trauma, please allow our team to help. You can easily schedule an in-person or online session by calling our office at (947) 217-3010.

PTSD Symptoms: Do I Have PTSD?

Victims of traumatic experiences suffer with day to day duties and activities. For example, they might struggle to concentrate on their work or feel paranoid when they’re at the grocery store; they might struggle to keep up a conversation with others or connect with their significant other. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) comes with specific symptoms and is diagnosed when the individual presents a set of these symptoms for 4 weeks or longer, following the traumatic event. Primary symptoms are as follows:

  • Flashbacks or nightmares, which cause the individual to relive their trauma in one capacity or another. This causes significant distress.
  • Numbness and avoidance of people, places, things that might trigger bad memories.
  • Sleep disturbances, trouble concentrating, irritability, changes in appetite.

How Can Trauma Therapy Help Me?

Trauma treatment often involves trauma therapy and/or PTSD counseling. These therapy modalities are designed to help victims of trauma process their painful past, work through any psychological harm it has caused them, better manage PTSD symptoms, and so on. As with most forms of counseling, the individual’s specific course of treatment will depend heavily on their individual needs and goals. That said, there are a few common approaches to trauma therapy that prove beneficial for these clients:

  • Psychodynamic therapy, which helps by searching an individual’s subconscious.
  • Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TFCBT), which focuses on helping the individual process all of their thoughts and emotions related to the trauma.
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), which is a newer approach, helping people better process trauma, guiding the individual through any roadblocks to one’s overall health and wellbeing.

When I met with Jillian Kraydich I was in awe with her professionalism and exceptional bedside manor. Our meeting started on time and I felt comfortable right from the start. She was patient, understanding and overall a great help for me. She took the time to get to know me over the course of a few meetings and always allowed me to talk about whatever was on my mind without interruptions or judgement. I have spoken with a few other therapists in the past but they did not allow me to speak as freely as Jillian did. I would highly recommend her for the numerous reasons I stated above.

Carolyn Nicholson was our school counselor and I worked with her for several years. She has an innate ability to quickly form relationships with people of all ages, including our students and staff members. Carolyn is insightful, enthusiastic, and compassionate in her work. Her intuition and discussion techniques enable people to explore their past experiences and perspectives. Also, those abilities guide others as they navigate journeys through their life experiences and self reflection. Carolyn Nicholson is a compassionate, inspiring, and trustworthy counselor!
