What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My go-to approach for treating anxiety is normalizing it and then teaching clients how to recognize and change unhelpful thoughts and patterns. I find the best benefit is knowing anxiety can be your friend and it can teach you something you need or aren't getting. It's good to be curious and not avoidant!

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

I teach the following tools:

  • Mindfulness and meditation – Learn to notice anxiety without reacting to it
  • Breathing exercises – Reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety
  • Notice thoughts – Identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with more productive and helpful thoughts
  • Journaling – Writing worries down to stop the unproductive loop of overthinking and allowing you to generate potential solutions and insights

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they report they are doing the skills they have learned in session and see that it works or helps.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy by listening to podcasts dedicated to mental health issues, exercise, and physical movement and connecting to activities that bring joy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can take a deep breath and be proud of taking the first step to making changes. You can identify what it will look and feel like when it is better so you can have a tangible goal to work toward.

Understanding Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are mental illnesses that can significantly impact daily life. Around 40 million adults in the US are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder each year, and many also experience depression. These conditions can cause severe symptoms that go beyond the normal ups and downs of life, such as:

  • Nervousness and worry all the time
  • Avoiding social situations due to overwhelming anxiety
  • Constant negative thoughts and self-doubt

Physical Symptoms and Side Effects

Mental health issues like anxiety and depression can also manifest physically. Common physical symptoms include:

  • Disrupted Appetite: Changes in appetite, either eating too much or too little
  • Irregular Sleep Patterns: Experiencing hypersomnia or insomnia
  • Fatigue: Feeling constantly tired and drained
  • Difficulty Focusing: Struggling to concentrate or think clearly
  • Indecisiveness: Finding it hard to make decisions or take action

Recognizing Anxiety and Depression

Identifying the signs of anxiety and depression is the first step towards healing. If you have experienced the following symptoms for more than two weeks, it may be time to seek help:

  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, hopelessness, or worthlessness
  • Physical pain with no apparent cause
  • Thoughts of suicide or dying

When I met with Jillian Kraydich I was in awe with her professionalism and exceptional bedside manor. Our meeting started on time and I felt comfortable right from the start. She was patient, understanding and overall a great help for me. She took the time to get to know me over the course of a few meetings and always allowed me to talk about whatever was on my mind without interruptions or judgement. I have spoken with a few other therapists in the past but they did not allow me to speak as freely as Jillian did. I would highly recommend her for the numerous reasons I stated above.

Carolyn Nicholson was our school counselor and I worked with her for several years. She has an innate ability to quickly form relationships with people of all ages, including our students and staff members. Carolyn is insightful, enthusiastic, and compassionate in her work. Her intuition and discussion techniques enable people to explore their past experiences and perspectives. Also, those abilities guide others as they navigate journeys through their life experiences and self reflection. Carolyn Nicholson is a compassionate, inspiring, and trustworthy counselor!
