What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

When providing online therapy, I use modified versions of the same approaches to counseling that I would use when providing counseling in the office. I start by seeking to understand what the client's concerns are and learning about the client's experiences. Then I will use a variety of approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and motivational interviewing to address the client's concerns and meet their individual goals.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Some of the tools that I often teach in online therapy include:

  • Value-based actions: In this skill, I help clients identify what values are most important to them as an individual and work with them to develop plans to increase actions related to these values in their daily routines.
  • Thought challenging: This skill helps clients to identify the influence of negative thought patterns or beliefs on their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and then challenge them with growth-oriented responses that motivate them toward their personal goals.
  • Mindfulness skills: These skills help individuals to identify what emotions they are experiencing and how those emotions are experienced in their bodies. Additionally, these skills help individuals to respond to these emotions and experiences in a positive manner.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I find that clients are making meaningful progress in online therapy when they continue to report increasing, maintain progress on their personal goals, express increased life satisfaction.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can best supplement their time in online therapy by setting aside time between sessions for reflection and time to practice the skills discussed in the session. I often encourage clients doing online therapy to designate 5 to 10 minutes before and after their sessions to prepare for and process their sessions before returning to their daily activities.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online session, I would encourage you to consider the following:

  • Do I have a private space where I would feel comfortable and safe sharing my emotions while in my online session?
  • Do I have a space where I am able to engage with the session with limited distractions?
  • Am I able to set aside time before and after the session to prepare and process before returning to my daily activities?
These can be helpful considerations when trying to decide between online therapy and traditional therapy in the office.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

When was the last time you checked in with yourself mentally? Today? Last week? Last month? Last year?

While we don’t always open up about how we’re feeling, we do all experience a range of emotions on a weekly or even daily basis. Maybe a car cut you off on the way to work this morning and it made you angry. Perhaps you’re dreading going home because the chores you need to get done are overwhelming. Maybe you’re waiting for your partner to get dinner with you later so you can talk about why you’ve been bickering a lot more recently. This list could go on forever. The takeaway is that we all encounter emotional struggles and mental health challenges that negatively affect our welling.

Fortunately, we’re able to learn how to manage these difficult emotions and situations to preserve our mental wellbeing. Ask yourself how you’re really doing. Is there anything you’d like to change, improve on, or overcome? Counselors, therapists, and psychologists all have unique skills, training, and experience to help people with all of these problems.

Being vulnerable is actually a strength and not a weakness—that’s why more and more mental health is such an important thing to talk about. It’s the same as being physically sick. And when you keep all those things inside, when you bottle them up, it makes you ill.” – Cara Delevigne

If you’re tired of bottling up your emotions and putting your mental wellbeing on the backburner, consider working with an online counselor at Thriveworks Counseling in Northeast Raleigh, NC. Our providers can help you work through many of your life issues, all from the comfort and convenience of your own home. When you’re ready to get started, just give our office a call.

What Do I Need to Know About Online Counseling?

Believe it or not, online counseling has been around for decades. Today, online counseling is a widely popular therapy option for people of all different backgrounds. Here at Thriveworks Counseling in Northeast Raleigh, NC, we offer our clients two main forms of online counseling, which are:

  • Telephone Counseling: Like the name implies, telephone counseling allows you to talk to your counselor or therapist via phone call. At the time of your appointment, your provider will give you a call and all you have to do is answer!
  • Video chat counseling: For this counseling service, you’ll talk to your provider via video chat. Well before your scheduled appointment time, your provider will send you a link to a secure video chat room, of which you will click at the time of your session. Just make sure you have a secure, reliable internet connection!

Both options are easy and effective. If you’re on the fence about which option to go with, we recommend that you try both to see what feels the best for you. Either way, your counselor will work with you on whichever platform that best suits your needs.

Can Online Counseling Help Me?

The short answer—yes! Online counseling at Thriveworks allows our clients to work through a range of mental health challenges ranging from low self-esteem to anxiety. For example, online counseling can offer assistance for:

  • Mental illnesses like depression and anxiety
  • Grief and loss
  • Family turmoil

  • Low self-esteem
  • Behavioral problems in children

  • Stress management

This list could go on. Online counseling has many added perks including comfort, convenience, reliability, affordability, and effectiveness. No more running from the office to your appointment after a meeting ran late or not having the motivation to leave the house for the day. You can talk with your counselor from virtually anywhere you choose.

As we touched on briefly, online counseling at Thriveworks is a smart and effective option. You’ll receive the same level of care and make the same meaningful progress virtually as you would in-person. I have been seeing Terryn Maher for a couple of months now and she is awesome!! Very knowledgeable, attentive, thorough, thoughtful, caring, etc. I could go on for awhile. I’ve been in counseling with another therapist for about 14 years but I already feel like I’m getting so much more from working with Terryn. Thriveworks on a whole has been great to work with as well. They are easy to work with and schedule appointments with. I was nervous about working with a company over directly with just the therapist but it has actually worked out well. I highly recommend them!
