What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

When dealing with grief, we wind up talking about the stages of grief. But every grief experience is different, and we find ourselves grieving things other than the death. People are often surprised by their guilt and anger during grief, and then worry about being judged.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

People dealing with grief struggle with having to deal with their pain, often over and over again. After a loss, life comes to a stop, then restarts with a lot of changes. Often, people must deal with the practical task of restarting life. So, I often find myself helping grieving people tolerate distress and make practical plans.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

I often see clients making meaningful progress when they are grieving but not overwhelmed. For many people, accepting the loss feels like a betrayal of what was lost. Accepting the change while still honoring the loss is a difficult balance to find.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Clients who have lost someone important often find themselves grieving 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some grieving people need to work to engage in daily life despite feeling grief. Others seem to need to set aside daily life and stop avoiding their feelings. Either way, it’s difficult.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for grief counseling, most people need to be ready to feel a lot of pain during their first few sessions. Set aside extra time after your first few sessions, as it may take a minute to find your “game face” again. Be prepared for mixed and sometimes surprising emotional reactions.

Starting Grief & loss counseling

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in North Little Rock, AR have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in North Little Rock, AR will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

Thriveworks offers it all. It’s very easy to change therapist until you find one you like. Only thing I’d like to see change is the price for missed appointments. It keeps people accountable but over $100 is a bit harsh.

THRIVE ALIVE is working on a project and it’s “ME” and she also has my “FFL” as a patient too. Let’s just say she is a little Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey wrapped in to one! I’m not telling you her name because I don’t want her to get booked and deprive me of my scheduled appointments. I’m just saying this woman is a “MIRACLE WORKER!” I got this CM!

I’ve known Zack, both professionally and personally, for the last 3 and a half years. He is a great person, and you won’t find anyone more dedicated to what they do. He truly cares about his patients and their outcomes, and he puts 110% of himself into his work to make sure they have the best outcomes possible. I consider myself lucky to have gotten the opportunity to work with him, and I know he will do great things now with Thriveworks.
