What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

My go-to approach in DBT is to teach the value of “it is what it is.” Once we learn that it is not a “suck it up” statement, but rather a way to define a problem, I find that we can proceed with more ease. I find the best benefit in acquiring this skill is that it helps us get unstuck from a point of pain because we can then put more energy toward a more functional goal.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

In DBT, I teach

  • Mindfulness: the ability to regulate our state, both physical and emotional
  • Wise mind: finding the middle road by recognizing and validating both our rational and emotional voices
  • Interpersonal effectiveness: the ability to recognize our needs and to present them in a functional manner in all environments

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in DBT when they recognize their own ability to regulate in previously triggering environments and function despite experiencing discomfort.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in therapy by practicing skills. Gaining mastery of each skill only happens through repetition.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

To prepare for their first dialectical behavior therapy session, an individual can remind themselves that they are always in charge of their treatment.
