What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Darlene: My go-to approaches for helping people in online therapy are CBT and humanistic theory. I find the best benefit in these approaches because they help clients recognize how to create their desired outcome.

Patty: My approach is to ensure clients are comfortable on Zoom, and to be patient when they struggle with the first session and have problems with Zoom.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Darlene: I teach mindfulness skills, boundaries/boundary setting, breathing skills, grounding techniques, self-care strategies, communication skills, cognitive distortions, and confidence-building skills.

Patty: I teach about the importance of being on time and setting up recurring sessions.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Darlene: I know that a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when their narrative changes, when they are able to articulate their own changed thinking and behaviors, and when their maladaptive behaviors/symptoms are reduced.

Patty: I see progress when clients come prepared, completed homework, and have a reduction in symptoms.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Darlene: Clients can engage in self-care, implement behavioral strategies, and practice mindfulness strategies.

Patty: Clients can supplement therapy through journaling, completing homework, and identifying triggers.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Darlene: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can write down the goals that you want to achieve in therapy and incorporate decompression time for yourself after your session.

Patty: Therapists will often review clients' notes, explore their demographics, and do a medication review prior to the first session.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

We are all capable of living happy, enriched lives—but sometimes we’re held back by the obstacles that are placed in front of us. These obstacles include symptoms of depression or anxiety, relationship problems, feelings of loneliness or hopelessness, a lack of success at work, and day to day stresses. Fortunately, we are able to overcome any obstacle in our way of living the life we long for—it just might take some professional help from a skilled, caring counselor or coach.

It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.”

–Aristotle Onassis

There will always be highs and there will always be lows. When you hit a low, consider working with a counselor, therapist, or coach. They can also equip you with essential tools for working through present as well as future issues, which might have a place on the list of challenges mentioned above.

Chesterfield Counseling: Who Can Benefit from Online Counseling Therapy?

Here at Thriveworks, we believe that everyone can find value in working with a skilled, caring counselor or life coach—whether they decide to work with their therapist face-to-face or via virtual means! That being said, it is important to note that some people might find online counseling especially valuable, based on their current circumstances. Consider the following real-life examples:

  1. Jenna has been looking for a counselor in her area with the right skills and specialties to help her overcome her mental health issues. Unfortunately, though, she can’t find a therapist remotely close to where she lives who is able to help her. The good news is that Jenna discovers online counseling opportunities, which enable her to find a counselor who is able to meet her needs.
  2. Ashley wants to pursue counseling but she also wants to keep this decision private. She worries that someone she knows will see her walk into the local therapy office and then mention it to her friends or family. These fears have kept her from scheduling a therapy appointment. Fortunately, she finds an online counselor, which enables her to begin this important work without disclosing it to friends and family members before she’s ready.
  3. Shaun loves his therapist, but he does not love the time that it takes for him to get to and from his session. He wishes there was a more convenient way to attend his therapy appointments each week. And his wish was granted! His counselor starts offering online counseling, which allows him to attend his sessions over the phone and in videoconferences.

Can you relate to Jenna, Ashley, or Shaun? Perhaps you’re looking for a counselor with a specific specialty but there aren’t any nearby; or maybe you want to remain anonymous in counseling; or, perhaps you’re sick and tired of commuting to your appointments. In each case, online counseling is an effective solution, as it enables you to make meaningful progress in therapy over the internet. If you’re interested in pursuing online therapy, reach out to Thriveworks Midlothian, VA today.
