What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in DBT is validation. I understand that people are doing the best that they can, trying their best, and generally want to feel better. However, I balance this validation with the idea that what they've been doing so far hasn't worked well for them, so our job is to work on finding something that works better for them and their lives.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

I teach DBT skills including mindfulness (observe, describe, and participate nonjudgmentally, one-mindfully, and effectively), interpersonal effectiveness tools (especially how to interact with others without alienating them and while achieving goals and maintaining or enhancing self-respect), emotion regulation (learning to understand and work effectively with emotions), and distress tolerance (surviving intense emotions and urges without making the situation worse). I also teach behavioral chain analysis, troubleshooting the above skills, and how to use the diary card (essential for tracking progress).

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in DBT when their diary card shows increased effectiveness of the DBT skills in helping them regulate mood, interact with others, and respond to urges for self-harm/harm to others. Clients will report successful use of skills as well as a variety of DBT skills used for a variety of stressors. Subjectively, clients report their life feels more positive and worth living when they have experienced progress in DBT.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in DBT by doing the diary card every day, logging skills use and effectiveness, and consciously and actively practicing the DBT skills and topics discussed in sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

To prepare for their first DBT session, an individual can research what goes on in DBT and what to expect when engaging in DBT. Specifically, they can research diary cards, what support looks like in DBT, and how to access the therapy and therapist in the most effective manner.

I have been working with Jared for over a year now. When I first started with him, I was apprehensive about going to a new therapist. I was with one before and did not have much success. After my first session, I knew he was the right fit for me. My spouse had already been going for a while, so we were able to compare experiences. One thing we noticed was how Jared adapted his therapy style to each of us. We then started couples therapy with him. He has been a God-send for us in helping us work through our issues. We were able to uncover things about us that made us stronger as a team. I cannot recommend Jared enough. He is truly amazing and a master of his craft.

I met Jared @ an Out-Patient program back in 2012. I was going going threw so much at work & home and was in much need of guidance! While I HATED being there, I knew something needed to change. Somehow through out the years, I had lost my Voice. I no longer could balance what we call LIFE. Being a Wife, Step-mom, Business Woman, the Pilar to my immediate family & finally having my own child, took a toll on me...I could no longer function! While in this program, Jared asked my permission if he could be my Voice. Confused, I said yes. Then he said I could take it back when I was ready. Again confused, I replied...Okay. Each day with him, I grew stronger & stronger. I looked forward to being in the Program. By the end,I knew what he meant, I had my VOICE back! Jared helped me find myself again! Jared is NOT your typical therapist. He does not sit there with a pen + paper asking the obvious questions! He is a real down to earth person who genuinely cares about you & wants you to succeed. I was so HAPPY to find out he ventured out on his own. He has been my LIFE COACH since leaving the program & now my 13 yr old gets the PRIVILEGE to benefit from his wisdom as well! I will follow him (Virtually) where ever he goes!
