Starting Performance anxiety counseling

What is performance anxiety counseling?

Performance anxiety counseling is a therapeutic approach geared toward treating anxiety related to performing a task, such as stage fright, public speaking, athletic competition, sex, and other performance-related activities. Its goal is to reduce anxiety levels and symptoms that inhibit one’s functioning.

How does performance anxiety counseling work?

Thriveworks’ performance anxiety counseling in Media focuses on addressing underlying fears of failure and any perfectionist tendencies that are inhibiting someone with performance anxiety from living their life the way they want. Techniques used in performance anxiety therapy can include cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, relaxation techniques, and more.

Is performance anxiety counseling conducted in person or online?

Performance anxiety counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does performance anxiety counseling last?

At Thriveworks, performance anxiety counseling in Media can be a short-term process for people treating a specific area of performance, some finding treatment to be effective after just a few sessions. However, the length of counseling will ultimately differ in duration depending on the client and their levels of anxiety.

Performance Anxiety Counseling in Media, PA / Delaware County, PA

Performance anxiety is a common occurrence we have all faced at one point or another in our lifetimes. Anxiety in general is a common biological trait we all share as humans and one that prepares us for and forces us to react to danger. However, if you are experiencing performance anxiety that you would like to resolve, reach out to Thriveworks Media for help. We’re here for you.

Do I Have Performance Anxiety?

The differences between having some butterflies or being slightly nervous and having true performance anxiety are significant. Performance anxiety starts to become problematic when it significantly affects your ability to perform or function in an occupational, social, interpersonal, or academic environment. Untreated it can lead to a person self medicating themselves with alcohol and ro drugs.

What Are the Symptoms of Performance Anxiety?

So how do you know if you have performance anxiety and should consult with a therapist? If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms and or behaviors and it is affecting any areas of your life you might benefit from consulting with a therapist.

  1. Shaking
  2. Sweating Palms
  3. Racing heart beat
  4. Trembling Voice
  5. Erectile Dysfunction
  6. Profusely Sweating
  7. Inability to concentrate
  8. Dizziness
  9. Confusion
  10. Mind blanking out
  11. Avoidance
  12. Stuttering/slurring of speech

Performance anxiety can negatively affect multiple areas of life, including:

  1. School
  2. Career
  3. Finances
  4. Sexual performance
  5. Relationships
  6. Self image/Self esteem

How Can Mental Health Treatment Help?

The most common treatment used to treat performance anxiety is CBT; which stands for cognitive behavior therapy. CBT is an evidence based treatment method proven to show results. It will teach you the connection between your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and behaviors. During CBT patients reframe negative thinking patterns into more positive ones. Patients also make changes in their behavior. Treatment will also teach you coping skills to better manage the overwhelming emotions and thoughts so they do not interfere with functioning.

I looked around for a therapist for a month or so I found this place and I read and reread the reviews and Lauren’s bio a few times When I finally called a few months ago the woman who took my information and answered my questions, I specifically asked if I needed a new letter for my emotional support dog would they be able to help. She assured me absolutely yes. We do it all the time Now a few months into my sessions I asked Lauren for a letter to give my landlord. Lauren informed me over 3 weeks ago she would ask her boss. 2 weeks later she told me no, her boss said no. I had to go online. A year ago my landlord did not like the online one and wanted it from a local Therapist This past week when I had my appointment with Lauren, she said she couldn’t, i asked what kind of therapist she was. Because I was told when I decided to come to your practice that I could get one, I was told I had to have a few sessions with the therapist Now on Tuesday 2/13 I asked, she told me she was meeting with her boss the next day and would tell him what I was told She said she would email me the next day, now it’s Saturday and nothing. I now am so upset that I put all this time into a therapist that isn’t qualified to write a letter, not because of her, but from some rule that I was lied to about on the onset Now I really think I need to go find a true therapist The fact I’m told to go online to get one from a stranger, while I am in therapy Makes me question your practice In sales we call it bait and switch

I am pleased to have someone I can tell how I am feeling that I would not express to family or friends. The medication helps me to get a better night sleep and helps me feel better the following days and to cope throughout the days that follow.
