What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

The therapy approach I use for helping families is Ecosystemic Structural Family Therapy. This focuses on exploring the impacts of the parenting style, home setting, and community to help support positive growth in a child and relationships they have.

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

I assist families in building the following skills to meet their treatment goals in family therapy:

  • Communication skill: Promotes appropriate verbalization and reception of needs before they become larger issues
  • Emotional regulation techniques: To better manage physical symptoms of emotions to promote values-based action as opposed to emotional reactive behaviors
  • Cognitive coping skills: To assist with managing automatic thoughts that impact our emotions and to process core beliefs that impact our perception of the world we interact with
  • Acceptance: Working with clients to identify what is outside of their control in the moment and working to shift focus to action on things that they can control
  • Mindfulness: Supports a client to be better grounded in the present moment, build observation skills of a client's internal and external experience, and moving past their judgements to see things and situations as they are

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

I know clients are making progress in therapy when they are less often moving away for uncomfortable situation and emotions and are more often moving towards their values and goals through action. Clients are typically utilizing the skills learned in therapy outside of the therapy office to increase the likelihood these values based actions. Clients also tend to demonstrate a greater level of insight into their emotions and report a decreased impact of these emotions on their decision making.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

To supplement therapy, clients can practice and implement the skills learned in therapy in their day to day lives. It is also important to engage in preventative strategies, such as a regular sleep scheduled, healthy diet, appropriate work life balance, engagement with positive social support, and hobbies, as they can improve our overall emotional well-being throughout the day. While these are not possible all the time, the more we engage with them, the more benefits we receive from that action.

What should someone do to prepare for starting family therapy?

To prepare for their first family therapy session, all an individual needs to bring with them is an attitude that is honest, open to alternative perspective, and a willingness to try the interventions suggested in the session. It also can be helpful to have a general idea of what the client's goals for therapy may be. The client should be prepared to answer some general questions about themselves to give the therapist a clearer picture of who they are.

Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Media, PA usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Media, PA offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

I looked around for a therapist for a month or so I found this place and I read and reread the reviews and Lauren’s bio a few times When I finally called a few months ago the woman who took my information and answered my questions, I specifically asked if I needed a new letter for my emotional support dog would they be able to help. She assured me absolutely yes. We do it all the time Now a few months into my sessions I asked Lauren for a letter to give my landlord. Lauren informed me over 3 weeks ago she would ask her boss. 2 weeks later she told me no, her boss said no. I had to go online. A year ago my landlord did not like the online one and wanted it from a local Therapist This past week when I had my appointment with Lauren, she said she couldn’t, i asked what kind of therapist she was. Because I was told when I decided to come to your practice that I could get one, I was told I had to have a few sessions with the therapist Now on Tuesday 2/13 I asked, she told me she was meeting with her boss the next day and would tell him what I was told She said she would email me the next day, now it’s Saturday and nothing. I now am so upset that I put all this time into a therapist that isn’t qualified to write a letter, not because of her, but from some rule that I was lied to about on the onset Now I really think I need to go find a true therapist The fact I’m told to go online to get one from a stranger, while I am in therapy Makes me question your practice In sales we call it bait and switch

I am pleased to have someone I can tell how I am feeling that I would not express to family or friends. The medication helps me to get a better night sleep and helps me feel better the following days and to cope throughout the days that follow.
