What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My main approach for online therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) while mixing in the person-centered approach of warmth and non-judgment. I prefer this approach because of the focus on thoughts, feelings, and actions, and the combo of creating a warm and supportive environment for the client and clinician to work together.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I typically teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Cognitive distortions: finding the way we distort the truth
  • Gratitude exercise: focusing on the good in our life
  • Thought record: making a list of our negative and positive thoughts per day
  • Mood logs: making a list of the high and low moods per day
  • Mindfulness: using meditation practices
  • Emotional regulation skills: building coping skills to manage feelings

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when the client is feeling better overall, reports better moods, has fewer negative thoughts, develops and uses coping skills, has more energy, is able to make progress on their goals and objectives for therapy, etc.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with bibliotherapy, finding positive social groups, volunteering, starting hobbies, working on their overall purpose in life, exercising, etc.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can list out your strengths and weaknesses, build a list of coping skills that you already use for negative emotions, journal about what you want to work on in counseling, etc.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

7 Reasons to Try Online Therapy at Thriveworks

Online therapy is a great option for many people, from those who can’t find a qualified counselor nearby to those who are looking for a more convenient option. Here are 7 reasons to try online therapy:

  1. It’s a convenient option. No surprise here. Online counseling offers convenience, as you don’t have to go out of your way to make it to your session. It eliminates the commute time and allows you to attend your session from home (or wherever else you might be).
  2. It’s comfortable, too. On the same note, online counseling offers optimal comfort. You can work with your therapist from the comfort of home, work, your car, or anywhere else that offers a quiet space for you to attend your session.
  3. It’s tested and true. Don’t worry, you aren’t sacrificing or slowing down your progress in therapy if you choose to work with your counselor online. Evidence shows that online therapy can prove just as effective, and in some cases, even more effective than in-person counseling.
  4. It’s affordable: Online counseling is an affordable counseling service, too. These days, most major insurance companies will cover online counseling services.
  5. It’s easier to open up: Some people struggle to open up to their therapist. Fortunately, these individuals often find that opening up is possible via virtual means. In other words, they’re able to open up properly over the phone or video chat.
  6. It’s fast and flexible: Online counseling also offers fast, flexible scheduling options. You’ll also have greater flexibility in when you can schedule your appointment. You won’t be limited to daytime sessions.
  7. Reliability: With online counseling, you can trust that external factors like traffic, sickness, and physical disabilities won’t (most likely) get in your way of attending your session. This means you won’t have to go through the process of canceling or rescheduling your therapy appointment.

These are all great reasons to work with an online counselor. If these benefits intrigue you, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Lynchburg.
