What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My main approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I prefer this approach because the way one thinks affects the way one acts and also influences overall feelings.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

During depression counseling, I teach the following tools:

  • Cognitive distortions: Finding the way we distort the truth
  • Gratitude exercise: Focusing on the good in our life
  • Thought record: Making a list of our negative and positive thoughts per day
  • Mood logs: Making a list of the high and low moods per day
  • Mindfulness: Using meditation practices
  • Emotional regulation skills: Building coping skills to manage feelings

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they are feeling better overall, have a lower score on depression inventory (scale), report better moods, fewer negative thoughts, and have more energy.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with exercise, starting hobbies, being in positive social groups, and journaling.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can list out times in your life when you felt sad and why, and express current overall feelings and thoughts that are getting in the way of positive functioning in life.
