What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression includes both dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). I use these modalities because they prioritize teaching about how distress functions and impacts the brain and body, providing clients with insight that can lead to better coping and emotion regulation. I use behavioral activation to help counter lethargy and low motivation that often comes with depression, and I find CBT helpful for challenging negative self-talk, challenging ineffective core beliefs, and changing ineffective habits.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I use tools such as:

  • Subjective units of distress
  • Behavioral activation
  • Emotion regulation skills
  • Distress tolerance skills
  • Thought challenging
These tools help address coping with depressed mood, challenging lethargy and low motivation, and increasing positive thought patterns.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making progress in therapy for depression when they are following through more effectively on their tasks, reporting a lighter mood, and starting to apply cognitive reframes and emotion regulation skills without prompting.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Outside of therapy, clients can best supplement their therapy for depression by applying skills they've learned in therapy and doing their best to engage in activities of any kind to keep momentum and build motivation.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

In preparing for your first session working on depression, it is helpful to reflect on when your depression started, how you experience your depression, and if there is anything you find helpful in managing your depression. Therapy always starts with assessing what you are bringing in to work on, so the more information you can share, the better.

Prior to coming to Thriveworks I only had counselors through my universities. Entering the real world of counseling was stressful, but Thriveworks made it easy! At Thriveworks I have found it easiest find a counselor with availability, ease of payment so that it doesn't feel transactional, and a good fit. My counselor has been phenomenal with seeing me for who I am being open to my different identities and even helping me make sense of my experiences because of them. Real world counseling doesn't seem so scary anymore
