What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

My preferred approach for helping people in family therapy is using systems theory as well as play therapy techniques. With play therapy interventions, I find that they can alleviate some tensions and facilitate the communication process between family members.

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

I teach the following tools in family therapy:

  • Communication tools (I statements, soft start ups, assertive statements, assertive listening skills)
  • Relationship cycles (Woodsfellow love/fear cycles)

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

I know a family is making meaningful progress in therapy when each participant can verbalize positive shifts and changes within their family relationships. When each participant reports feeling heard and understood, I know therapy has been successful. For therapy with families to be successful, I believe that finding shared goals for the unit to work towards together is most helpful (i.e. promoting feelings of respect between all members, communicating in ways that focus on understanding and acknowledging the wants/feelings of others).

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in family therapy using strategies and tools discussed and reviewed within the therapy room.

What should someone do to prepare for starting family therapy?

To prepare for your first family therapy session, it is helpful to think about the changes you all would like to pursue that you feel would make your life easier/better.

Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Kennesaw, GA usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Kennesaw, GA offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Life’s Disturbances and Family Challenges

Life can and often does change in an instant. Therapy can guide families toward healthy, connected responses during disturbances such as:

  • An accident that causes injury or disability
  • Death of a family member
  • Loss of the family’s home
  • Loss of a job
  • Financial stress or crisis

Not every challenge that families face is a crisis. Some begin slowly and grow with time. Like a crisis, these are usually not anyone’s fault, but if left unaddressed, they may overwhelm the family. Therapy can help families handle on-going challenges such as:

  1. Mental illness
  2. Marital conflict
  3. Parenting challenges

Why Choose Family Therapy?

Many of life’s challenges have solutions, but finding the path forward in the middle of on-going tension or a crisis is really hard. Therapy may give an outside perspective that a family needs to move forward. Here are a few examples of how therapy might help. A skilled therapist may …

  • Reopen any barriers to communication that have formed.
  • Use calming and integrated techniques to find resolutions to any differences individuals have.
  • Design ways for each family member to express their needs and how they can give and receive support.

Family systems therapy and family structural therapy are the two most common forms of family therapy. They rest upon the idea that each individual family member has a unique role and identity from the family, and people are best understood in the context of their family.

The goal of family therapy is to help each member by helping the family as a whole. Therapy may examine how a family copes with stress, takes on certain roles, sets their expectations, and more. A skilled therapist may also delve into each family member’s communication style, birth order, love language, and/or personality type.

Having him as an unbiased, professional ear to listen to my situations has proven to be invaluable. So, many people in my life have tried to convince me to act in their interest and not my own.

I could not be happier with my psychiatric nurse she’s very thorough, responsible, and caring individual. I appreciate that if I fail to reach out to her on the minute, she takes the time to reach out to me to get our meeting started, and is very attentive to any notice that I give her And I appreciate her recommendations
