What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to approaches for helping people in cognitive behavioral therapy are: help clients test their core beliefs; help the client identify automatic negative thoughts and test for evidence that does and does not support them, assist in overcoming phobias, help lower stress & depression, assist in relapse prevention and maintenance involving old maladaptive patterns in their behaviors, aid in changing maladaptive beliefs and help change negative self-talk. I enjoy using cognitive behavioral therapy because it can help with anger control, pain control, anxiety and depression symptoms, creative thinking, health problems, phobias, addictions, sexual dysfunction, social withdrawal, and PTSD.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I teach the following tools in cognitive behavioral therapy: thought-stopping, communication/assertive training, relaxation techniques, social skills, coping skills, relapse prevention, activity scheduling, behavior experiments, behavior rehearsal (practice new thoughts before an actual situation), exposure therapy, and anger management.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy when a client is recognizing problematic thoughts or behaviors and making appropriate changes.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in cognitive behavioral therapy by practicing their personalized homework in between appointments. Homework is a collaborative effort between the therapist and the client.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To prepare for your first cognitive behavioral therapy session, you can make a list of things you would like to talk about when you come to therapy. You can also take a moment to imagine what it would be like if your anxiety was lower than it is today.

Jessica Gort is by far the best therapist I’ve ever had. She’s not only met my needs and expectations, she goes above and beyond that. When I first met with Jessica i was newly sober and recently lost my father, I was struggling and had just ended a professional relationship with a prior therapist that couldn’t help me with what I needed at that time. I felt lost and was losing hope until I met her. I expressed my concerns with Jessica and she did everything she could to help me in the ways that I needed, to keep my sobriety and mental health intact during my grieving process. If I could rate her 10 stars I would. She’s amazing. Highly recommend.
