What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a negative cycle. CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

One tool I teach goes like this:

  • Step 1 – Make a list.
  • Step 2 – Record unproductive thoughts.
  • Step 3 – Create replacement thoughts.
  • Step 4 – Read Your List Often.
  • Step 5 – Notice And Replace.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in CBT when they are able to identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and to learn practical self-help strategies. These strategies are designed to bring about immediate positive changes in their quality of life.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

I see progress when clients consistently practice their techniques.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can be open, honest and committed.

I am a recently retired licensed clinical social worker with 45 plus years of experience in that field of practice. I attended undergraduate school with Michael Martin and have continued to maintain contact with him since that time. Michael has consistently impressed me as a caring, knowledgeable and empathic individual who has brought these traits into his practice as a psychotherapist. He speaks very positively about his work and his satisfaction in assisting the individuals he provides services for on their behalf. In conclusion, I strongly recommend considering Michael as ones' psychotherapist.

As a therapist, I have worked with Michael Martin for the past 5 or 6 years and found him very objective and insightful while working with a diverse population with many issues. I have witnessed his clients' trust and respect for him in his kind approach to them and their needs. Michael is a knowledgeable and skillful counselor who treats each patient with care and consideration.
