Starting Marriage counseling

What is marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in Dallas, TX is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in Dallas, TX work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.

Is Now the Time for Marriage Counseling?

Spouses often wonder, should we go to marriage therapy over this? When is the right time to start counseling? In some ways, the only people who know when they are ready for marriage therapy are within the marriage. There is no right time to start marriage counseling, but there is also no wrong time to start it either.

Some people start counseling in the midst of a crisis, when they feel like they are out of options. Some spouses start therapy because of a particularly stressful circumstance, even though their relationship may be doing well. Other couples have a goal they may want to achieve together and therapy can help them reach it. No list could contain all the reasons some couples begin therapy, but here are a few…

1) They do not like each other.

It may not be popular to admit, but at times, spouses may love each other but they do not like each other. When this becomes a normal way of relating instead of an occasional feeling, then these feelings may be a signal that something is going on in the marriage that needs to be addressed. Marriage therapists often can help spouses uncover the root issue and work through it.

2) They do not feel anything for each other.

Not love. Not hate. Not frustration. Not passion. All emotion—positive and negative—has ceased. Ice can cause just as much damage as fire. All romantic relationships ebb and flow, but coldness becomes the pattern, both spouses should consider reaching out for help. Marriage therapists can often help couples identify the roots of the stonewalling and rekindle their love.

3) Ongoing issues are driving a wedge within the marriage.

Every couple has annoyances that are on-going. It may be as small as how loudly one spouse chews. It may be a bigger issue, like how to relate to the in-laws. It is paramount that spouses speak to each other about these issues with the kindness of respect, but often, these problems escalate into personal attacks. This drives a wedge between each spouse and makes daily life harder. If on-going issues are plaguing the marriage, it may be time to reach out for help.

I have been working with Dr. Covey for almost 6 months now and she has been excellent. I feel like I am heard and understood even when I have a hard time expressing things myself and putting thoughts into words. Having someone who can actually listen and provide the resources to assist myself with past trauma and current challenges has been a life changer.

This is prior to being seen so this is strictly based on first impressions upon entering the building. The waiting area is nice but undefined as to where one should go nor any indications as to what is needed to be done. No one was there to greet us nor was there any desk or window to suggest someone would. We looked for the therapist's office but no doors had any identification to point us in the right direction. At this point we're at the mercy of the clock alerting the therapist to seek us out in the waiting area in order to be seen. Not the best first impression. I will update this review if and when we are seen.
