Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Dallas Couples Therapy—Therapists and Counselors

When trust breaks down, it can be restored. It is not an easy process: rebuilding trust takes time and consistent effort. It may also require the assistance of a couples therapist. When partners are off track, they may want to get back on track, but often, they do not know how. By working with a couples counselor, many partners are getting back on track individually and within their relationship.

Every couple needs a little help along the way, and Thriveworks Counseling in Dallas, TX has provided that help for many people. Our Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists have worked with many couples who needed guidance for their strained relationships. Reach out today for help.

Relationship Problems: Solve Them with a Therapist

When couples are stressed and struggling and strained, each partner can feel isolated. They may feel alone in the difficulty and wonder, are we the only couple who is facing this issue?

It is understandable to ask this question, and the unequivocal answer is no, you are not the only couple to ever face this issue. It may feel that way because the details will always be unique. However, the underlying issue is likely something that other couples have faced as well. There are certain roadblocks that trip up many couples. These roadblocks are difficult, but they are common. And they have solutions. A few of these common roadblocks are…

  • Differing Expectations
  • Disagreements about Family
  • Communication Difficulties
  • Difficulty with Intimacy
  • Distrust

How Could Relationship Counseling Help?

Whether the challenge is distrust, disagreement, different expectations, or something else, many challenges are simply opportunities for growth. When partners have a skilled marriage therapist, they can often navigate these challenges and move forward with their relationship. How might marriage therapists help?

  1. By establishing a reasonable timeline for change. Some adjustments need to be made sooner rather than later. Other changes take time. How can couples know the difference? An experienced couples therapist can guide partners on which changes to make and when.
  2. By de-escalating the conflict. When couples are in the middle of tension, they can all too often attack each other instead of the problem. Personal attacks escalate the tension and make it harder to solve the issue at hand. Couples therapists have many exercises that allow the couple to de-escalate the tension and work together as they solve the problem.

I have been working with Dr. Covey for almost 6 months now and she has been excellent. I feel like I am heard and understood even when I have a hard time expressing things myself and putting thoughts into words. Having someone who can actually listen and provide the resources to assist myself with past trauma and current challenges has been a life changer.

This is prior to being seen so this is strictly based on first impressions upon entering the building. The waiting area is nice but undefined as to where one should go nor any indications as to what is needed to be done. No one was there to greet us nor was there any desk or window to suggest someone would. We looked for the therapist's office but no doors had any identification to point us in the right direction. At this point we're at the mercy of the clock alerting the therapist to seek us out in the waiting area in order to be seen. Not the best first impression. I will update this review if and when we are seen.

Easy and convenient to book according to my schedule. I feel like I'm learning and making progress with Mrs. Antoine. She is extremely kind and empathetic. I would recommend a friend to Thriveworks because of my experience with her.
