What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is making sure their therapy goals are personalized. I find the best benefit in building rapport with clients because the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important aspects of effective therapy intervention.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Relaxation and coping tools for minimizing anxiety and managing stress.
  • Distress tolerance skills for managing intense emotions, dealing with fight/flight response, and minimizing panic attacks or other distress.
  • Communication tools for minimizing conflict or expressing thoughts and emotions effectively.
  • Problem-solving skills for managing symptoms specific to neurodiversity (ADHD, autism, OCD).
  • Emotional regulation tools for responding to stress or managing intense emotions.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they report less severe and less frequent symptoms or challenges from their symptoms over time. For example, continuing to report feeling happy or no longer feeling anxious for a month. Other times, I might use self-report questionnaires to track progress.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy in a variety of ways specific to their needs and therapy goals, which may include writing down significant events/thoughts/emotions, seeking social and emotional support with friends or family, practicing any tools discussed in individual therapy, and regularly engaging in pleasurable activities.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can make sure you have a good internet connection, have a good quiet and private setting to meet, have Zoom download on your PC/phone/tablet, and test your microphone and speakers. You can also think through what you would like to improve or work on as part of your goals in therapy, such as improving your mood, not feeling depressed, feeling less anxious, or learning to better respond to stress. You can also bring any questions or concerns you might have and want to address.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Columbus, OH accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

How to Upkeep Your Mental Health from Home

Online Counseling is a fantastic tool to use to upkeep your mental health, but it is just one in many. Our counselors suggest doing a little something every day to keep your mental state healthy and happy. A few things you can do in quarantine include:

  • Limit the time you watch or read the news: Three, 10-minute sessions from a reputable news source is plenty of time to get caught up on what is going on in the world and locally. Don’t peek outside of those times! Also, sometimes it can help to let all your anxious thoughts flood free during this time. Give your mind complete acceptance to run free. Of course, the most important step after this is to close the news app. Try to go back to thinking rationally and do something that soothes you. Easier said than done, we know. But it is possible, sometimes we just need a little support.
  • Keep up those healthy habits: Yoga, getting outside, at-home workouts (have you looked at Pinterest’s many suggestions for this?), and trying new meals are great ways to break up the monotony and take care of your physical health, which will always help your mental health.
  • Try something new: Yes, those Netflix shows are calling your name. It’s easy to fall into the same routine. Trying something new is a great way to stimulate underused parts of your brain. Bake an extreme cake, try that woodworking project, or learn how to grow indoor plants!

I recently started utilizing Thriveworks and my counselor is amazing! I have seen a few therapists over the years, but she is the first that I feel has real tools that work for me. I am an overly analytical person, and she has introduced me to so many new ways to think about various problems, new and old, that have given me a fresh perspective. Today was the second day in my short time here that I left with that "mind blown" feeling, and today I couldn’t believe the positive feelings I had on these new approaches she provided me. Also, which is the best part of course, the office is so peaceful and calming, the staff are all incredible, and just walking in the door makes me de-stress quite a bit. I definitely recommend giving Thriveworks a shot if you are looking for a welcoming place! Go Buckeyes!
