What is your go-to approach for teen counseling?

My go-to approach for helping teens in counseling is being very person-centered, making sure that I get to know the teen's worldview and get to know them as a person. I enjoy a person-centered approach because it allows my client to practice their independence in a safe environment and fosters a strong therapeutic rapport.

What tools do you teach in teen counseling?

In teen counseling, I teach the following tools:

  • Awareness: Without awareness, we can't change. How are your thoughts, emotions, and/or body cues influencing you and affecting your choices/ behaviors?
  • Identifying cognitive distortions: What unhealthy repetitive thought patterns are happening subconsciously?
  • Reframing: How we can reframe these negative thought patterns to empower you as the client.
  • DBT skills like “wise mind”: Using both our emotions and logic to create a foundation of our “wise mind” when making decisions.
  • Deep breathing: Breathing exercises to slow down an overworked nervous system and create more self-awareness and safety within your body.
Plus many more depending on what my client's goals and needs are!

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in teen counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in teen therapy when they are feeling secure, empowered, and safe enough to advocate for their needs and start to make decisions that align with their genuine selves. I love it when clients are able to celebrate their hard work and say, “Guess what? I set a boundary!” or “I was able to catch my inner critic and show myself compassion instead!”

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement teen counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with journaling, mindful walks or other enjoyable forms of exercise, deep breathing practices at home, comforting hobbies, healthy social media use, and social support.

What should someone do to prepare for starting teen counseling?

To prepare for their first teen counseling session, a teen can reflect on what goals they want to work on in therapy, what obstacles have gotten in their way, and what they might need from a therapist. It is important that they find a therapist they connect with and feel empowered and comfortable enough to be vulnerable with.

Starting Teen counseling

What is teen counseling?

Teen counseling helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst teens include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problematic relationships with food.

How does teen counseling work?

Teen counseling works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the teen’s unique needs — based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks teen therapists in Colorado Springs have the expertise and experience to help young individuals at their level.

Does my teen need therapy?

Signs that teens might need Teen counseling can be very subjective, as they are experiencing many changes and can have intense reactions to them. As parents, you know your child best and are best equipped to judge whether certain reactions are standard behaviors for your teen or whether they might be hinting at a larger problem. Even so, there are a few common signs and events that often point to a need for therapy, such as experiencing divorce or loss, grief, consistent low moods, teens distancing themselves and becoming isolated, losing interest in hobbies, excessive anger or irritability, substance use issues, and suicidal ideation, among others.

Is teen counseling conducted in person or online?

Teen counseling providers at Thriveworks in Colorado Springs, CO offer both in person and online therapy by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does teen counseling last?

The length of teen counseling depends on your teen’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, teen counseling sessions will last for several months.

Since day one Marie has been so nice and understanding of all my issues with anger. She has helped me so much to take a step back and analyze issues and approach them in a very calm manner and retrain my brain to deal with anxiety issues that lead to anger. She has helped a ton in putting forth effort to better my marriage and other relationships with family. I couldn’t thank her enough for all her help in the last couple of months and in the future! Love her!! Definitely recommend her!
