What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is a mixture of supportive reflection, cognitive behavioral therapy, coping skills, psychoeducation, and solution-focused therapy. I prefer this combination because of the nuances of the problems people share and the help they need.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Self-soothing techniques: This can be done with something as small as a beverage of choice or food. This tool is used to bring calm by slowly consuming a beverage or food and focusing on the temperature, taste, smell, and texture and blocking out everything else around you.
  • Interruption of automatic thoughts: This involves focusing on other things such as playing category games, naming 20 candy bars or colleges/universities, or naming all 50 states.
  • Breathing exercises to help slow the heart rate down and breathing.
  • Psychoeducation and reviewing thinking errors.
  • How to correct automatic thoughts.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they have difficulty thinking of things to address and work on over several (3-6) sessions.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by spending time with their friends and family and sharing with them. Also, working out, journaling, doing leisure activities, joining groups doing fun things that they are interested in or want to find out if they will like. Using their coping skills.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can think about what is bringing you to therapy that you want to get help talking through. This is your opportunity to introduce me to what is going on in your life that made you think, “I think I need to talk to someone to get help with this.”

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Can individual therapy help me?

Yes, individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, at Thriveworks can help you to improve your mental health and overall quality of life.

Is individual therapy conducted in person or online?

Individual therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does individual therapy last?

The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.

How much does individual therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. Being a person who doesn’t like to share their dirt with strangers , I’m finding it very easy to talk with my counselor freely about the issues that I’m dealing with. I highly recommend their services.

Prior to coming to Thriveworks I only had counselors through my universities. Entering the real world of counseling was stressful, but Thriveworks made it easy! At Thriveworks I have found it easiest find a counselor with availability, ease of payment so that it doesn't feel transactional, and a good fit. My counselor has been phenomenal with seeing me for who I am being open to my different identities and even helping me make sense of my experiences because of them. Real world counseling doesn't seem so scary anymore
