What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is very eclectic and client-centered. I find the best benefit in working from a psychodynamic perspective because our past experiences greatly inform how we make sense of ourselves and the world around us. I will then work in different therapeutic approaches based on the client’s needs and what they feel works best for them.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Mindfulness
  • Grounding exercises
  • Meditation
  • Body scanning
  • Sitting with and identifying emotions
  • Journaling
  • CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy)
  • Communication skills
  • Boundary setting
  • Progressive muscle relaxation
  • Breathing exercises
  • Positive affirmations
  • Core belief identification
  • Attachment styles

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when skills and tools learned during session are used without much effort outside of session in daily life, leading to a reduction in symptoms and an increase in overall mood

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by journaling, logging their moods, practicing skills, and completing any homework given. The majority of the work done in therapy takes place not during session, but rather outside in our daily lives.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can think about “Why now?” What is bringing you into therapy at this time? What symptoms are you experiencing? How long have you been experiencing them? When did they start? What are you hoping most to accomplish in therapy? What changes do you want to see? If you have been in therapy before, what worked well for you? What did not work well for you?

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Online Counseling in Charlottesville, VA—Work with a Counselor Online

If you are in Charlottesville, VA and you’re in search of mental health services, consider working with an online counselor at Thriveworks Charlottesville. Online counseling is tested and true; many people find that it is just as beneficial as in-person counseling.

To schedule an online counseling appointment by phone or video, just call (434) 812-4009. Our scheduling team will ask you a few basic questions and then get you all set up for your appointment. We look forward to hearing from you!

How Does Online Counseling Work?

A lot of people worry that online counseling will be hard to navigate or set up. However, it’s actually a very simple service! All you need is access to a phone, computer, or another device that allows you to connect to the internet. Just click the link that your therapist sends you, at the time of your appointment.

Both phone counseling and video counseling prove effective. If you value or desire that face-to-face interaction you get in traditional in-person counseling, video counseling might be a good option for you. If, however, you don’t care for the face-to-face interaction, telephone counseling can get the job done too. Sometimes, it takes a little experimentation to figure out what works best. Thriveworks Charlottesville is happy to accompany you on this journey!

What Benefits Will I Find in Online Counseling?

As we just touched on above, online therapy is an effective counseling option and proves beneficial to a lot of people. Again, research shows that online counseling works. And some people find that working with their counselor via virtual medium is easier, which allows them to open up more quickly and make fast progress. Now, there are several online counseling benefits that continue to bring people into online counseling.

These include:

  1. Just how convenient it is: The frontrunner is convenience. People just can’t get enough of how convenient online counseling makes therapy. Instead of having to leave the house and drive to your appointment, you can hop into your session from home, in both telephone counseling and video counseling.
  2. The level of comfort: Online counseling also offers a level of comfort that many don’t find in in-person counseling. You truly can attend from the comfort of your bed, your couch, anywhere you please.
  3. Its affordability: Additionally, these days, online counseling is affordable! Insurance companies now pay for video counseling and often telephone counseling, too. Also, Thriveworks Charlottesville, VA offers affordable self-pay options to ensure that everyone has access to the online counseling sessions they’re looking for.

If these benefits entice you and you want to experience them for yourself, all you have to do is reach out to Thriveworks Charlottesville. We’re here and ready to help.
