What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Molly: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to first spend time getting to know their strengths, values, and vision for a meaningful life and identifying where there are discrepancies between that and their current situation. I enjoy assisting people in making changes to their thoughts, behaviors, and boundaries to cultivate the life they want.

Robin: My go-to approach to helping people in online therapy is CBT. I find the best benefit in challenging thoughts because “what we tell ourselves is what we'll believe.”

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Molly: I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Identifying emotions: learning to recognize body cues and develop the vocabulary to label nuanced emotions
  • Distress tolerance (coping skills/grounding techniques): finding methods of behaving in ways that change how one feels or distract them from difficult emotions and gaining awareness of the here and now versus what is going on in the mind
  • CBT techniques: identifying thought patterns that are unhelpful and then working to change them through thinking and behaving in new ways
  • Assertiveness/boundaries: improving the ability to identify what one wants and needs in life and relationships, being able to communicate that effectively with others, and knowing when to walk away or create distance when someone can't or won't meet the needs

Robin: I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Self-talk: Helps the client hear themselves say out loud what they are thinking sometimes to challenge a maladaptive thought.
  • Sitting in the feeling or emotion: To help the client understand why they are reacting to certain stimuli (triggers) during the session to challenge thought

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Molly: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they begin to report that they are thinking about things in a different way or pushing themself to behave in new ways. I also use measurable methods such as questionnaires about the frequency and intensity of symptoms.

Robin: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they can admit that a thought or behavior needs to change and then actively change it.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Molly: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by creating mini-goals after each session to put something they took away from that session into action.

Robin: A client can supplement their time in online therapy by reading self-help books, listening to podcasts, journaling, meditating, and doing yoga, just to name a few.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Molly: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can ensure that you create the time to prioritize yourself, make sure you have a comfortable and private location, and identify the issues you are experiencing and how you want your life to be different.

Robin: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can remain calm and speak truthfully during the session.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Online Counseling in Charlotte, NC

Because of uncertainties and drastic changes in life that we face, many of us are finding ourselves worried, stressed, anxious, and fearful about what is coming next. As people, we have the capability to anticipate situations and plan out ahead of time what we are going to do. This ability to think ahead is what spurs us to go to the store and buy two weeks of groceries. It is what makes us sure we have enough medicine for ourselves and our family to last us during a possible quarantine. This same ability is also what leads us to think about all the possible things that can go wrong or that might happen to us, causing us to feel anxious and scared.

Excessive worrying not only strains our mental health, it can trigger physical symptoms as well, such as inability to sleep, tightness in the chest, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, fatigue, and muscle tension. It is totally normal to feel worried, but if you are experiencing excessive worry, reach out to Thriveworks Charlotte for help. We can get you an online counseling therapy appointment quickly for anxiety as well as other challenges, including depression, relationship issues, and more.

What Is Online Counseling?

Today, there are many ways to meet with a mental health provider. At Thriveworks, we offer both in-person and online counseling, the latter of which takes place over video. This allows our clients to meet with their therapist from the safety and comfort of home, with the added benefit of saving time by not having to travel to one of our offices.

Even if you aren’t great with technology, you will find it’s simple to establish a video counseling session by just clicking on the meeting link that will be sent to your email ahead of your scheduled session.

Is Online Counseling Effective?

Don’t worry – you will still be getting the same quality of service that Thriveworks is known for in online counseling. Multiple research studies have found that distance counseling is comparable in effectiveness to face-to-face sessions, and it works well for many different groups of people, including children, adults, and adolescents of all backgrounds and cultures.

Telehealth services are covered by most insurances and are compliant with HIPAA regulations. Remember, your mental wellbeing is just as important as your physical wellbeing in staying healthy.

I have been seeing Terryn Maher for a couple of months now and she is awesome!! Very knowledgeable, attentive, thorough, thoughtful, caring, etc. I could go on for awhile. I’ve been in counseling with another therapist for about 14 years but I already feel like I’m getting so much more from working with Terryn. Thriveworks on a whole has been great to work with as well. They are easy to work with and schedule appointments with. I was nervous about working with a company over directly with just the therapist but it has actually worked out well. I highly recommend them!
