What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is challenging the thoughts and behaviors that keep depression going. I find the best benefit in that because depression involves negative feelings that can affect physical, social and cognitive functioning.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression counseling:

  • Self-Care Skills: This can be a routine inclusive of regulated and balanced eating and sleeping, physical activity and adequate hydration
  • Time Management Skills: This can be ways to organize the time in one’s day to increase productivity.
  • Social Skills: This can be techniques to interact with others such as assertiveness skills, coping skills, communication skills, problem solving and emotional regulation.
  • Self Esteem Skills: This can include ways to improve a person’s self-concept by increasing awareness or participation in activities that reflect desired values, interests, accomplishments and capabilities.
  • Frustration Tolerance Skills: This helps with staying calm during times of obstacles or setback.
  • Critical Thinking Skills: This can help with identifying solutions for problems such as structured problem solving skills and decision making skills
  • Cognitive Restructuring: This involves identifying, challenging and replacing exaggerated ways of thinking (cognitive distortions)

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress depression counseling when they are achieving measurable objectives in route to their goal. Therapists generally rely on SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time Limited) goals. By specifically identifying what needs to occur to know that a goal is being met is how we measure progress!

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with practicing skills learned in therapy, ensuring that their therapeutic goals align with area of need, complete homework assignments, identify and provide topics for session, identify and disclose meaningful events and if unsure asking.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can schedule your appointment at a time when you will not be interrupted. Prepare for your appointment by finishing paperwork in advance, familiarizing yourself with the virtual or physical location, and taking a notebook and writing device for note taking. Plan to discuss your current issue, history and goals. Try to be as transparent when discussing intention and issues and ask questions on things you are unsure about.

Starting Depression counseling

Is it worth going to therapy for depression?

It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.

Depression counseling works by helping people pinpoint life problems, distorted thought patterns, and other causes of their depression, then process and work through them in order to mitigate the negative effects those factors have on their lives.

How to Deal with Depression – Therapists and Counselors in Charlotte

If you’re experiencing low moods for an extended period of time, there is a chance that you might be suffering from a depression disorder. Do not let this alarm you, however. Depression isn’t something that’s your fault or representative of a character flaw. Depression is a real disease that millions face.

What is sad, however, is that many people who become depressed are so overwhelmed with dark feelings that they don’t know life any other way. You might believe that this is simply “you,” but we’re here to tell you that these depressive feelings don’t have to run (or ruin) your life. You can find relief and change, just like countless others have, by deciding to seek care from a skilled depression counselor at Thriveworks Charlotte.

How Do I Know if I’m Depressed?

There are many different types of depression (which you can read about here), but one of the key characteristics is prolonged feelings of sadness.

In addition, someone with a depression disorder may experience:

  • Difficulty focusing
  • Restlessness
  • Belabored decision-making abilities
  • Loss of interest in formerly enjoyed activities
  • Irritability
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Consistently negative, self-deprecating thoughts
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Sleep issues (too much, too little or irregular)
  • Weight fluctuations (loss or gain)
  • Persistent feelings of guilt
  • Physical issues that do not improve with normal medical treatment
  • Ongoing anxiety or “empty” feelings
  • Suicide thoughts and/or attempts

Any one of the above symptoms by itself can completely cripple you, making your professional and personal life incredibly difficult to navigate.

Healing from Depression

The good news is that you don’t have to live this way any more. You don’t have to be defined by your depression or let it keep you from living a fulfilled life of continued growth and progress.

Depression is highly common and highly treatable, but many never seek help, for whatever reason. At Thriveworks Charlotte, we understand that meeting with a counselor can be an uncomfortable prospect — especially if you’ve never met with one before (of if you’ve had an unfortunate experience with a less-than-suitable clinician).

Scheduling Depression Counseling at Thriveworks Charlotte

We want to make scheduling as simple to approach as possible, while also remaining as transformative as possible:

  • That’s why we when you call us, we answer (no leaving uncomfortable/sensitive voicemails!)
  • That’s why we do not operate on a waiting list — you can likely meet with your counselor this week.
  • That’s why we accept most insurance providers — your mental health shouldn’t be prevented by financial restrictions.

You can change. You can thrive. Thriveworks Charlotte Depression Therapy can help. Reach out to Thriveworks today.

I have been seeing Terryn Maher for a couple of months now and she is awesome!! Very knowledgeable, attentive, thorough, thoughtful, caring, etc. I could go on for awhile. I’ve been in counseling with another therapist for about 14 years but I already feel like I’m getting so much more from working with Terryn. Thriveworks on a whole has been great to work with as well. They are easy to work with and schedule appointments with. I was nervous about working with a company over directly with just the therapist but it has actually worked out well. I highly recommend them!
