What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

I mainly use cognitive behavioral therapy because when you adjust your thinking and make changes in your routines, you can start to make positive life changes.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

With depression, it is important to first acknowledge the pain and burden people are facing when depressed. Then, step by step, we work on identifying feelings and issues, adding coping skills, like deep breathing, positive self-talk, and small, measurable steps to address problems and improve the quality of the client's daily life.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress when they are able to laugh or smile about something during sessions, start making plans again, and/or consider new goals.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

There are countless phone and computer apps available now to help clients, such as Smiling Mind (free) or Breethe, Balance, and more. There are also mini videos available on YouTube for deep breathing, meditations, and guided imagery.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first session, you don't have to do much other than make your appointment and attend your session, as this is a huge first step that may take a great deal of time and energy. Little steps will get you closer to your bigger goals and improve your daily life.

  • Sleep difficulties
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Excessive guilt
  • Psychomotor retardation (slowed thoughts and movements)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Poor concentration

9 Types of Depression

Depression can be caused by chemical changes in your brain, or external life events, or something else. Depression isn’t one-size-fits-all, which is why specialized depression counselors and psychiatrists at Thriveworks first take a full assessment of their clients to determine what kind of depression they may be experiencing. Labeling depression as one of the following can be a useful clinical tool when developing a treatment plan:

  • Peripartum (postpartum) depression, which can occur shortly after childbirth
  • Bipolar disorder (manic depression), which also includes mania
  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which often occurs during the winter months and disappears in spring and summer
  • Major depression, which can last weeks or months
  • “Situational” depression, which can be caused by the death of a loved one
  • Persistent depressive disorder (PDD), aka dysthymia, which lasts for two years or more
  • Atypical depression, also called major depressive disorder with atypical features, which can temporarily disappear when things are going well in your life
  • Psychotic depression, which can include hallucinations, delusions, or paranoia
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which can occur at the start of a woman’s period

Treatment plans can vary widely depending on diagnoses. For instance, someone with PMDD might be treated with oral contraceptives rather than antidepressants. And someone with situational depression may just need short-term psychotherapy, not a psychiatrist with a prescription pad, in order to talk through their feelings of grief.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
