Starting Marriage counseling

What is marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in Bethesda, MD is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in Bethesda, MD work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.

Marriage Counseling in Bethesda, MD—Counselors and Therapists

A healthy marriage requires time and effort with no days off. It’s accepting and working through the challenges that come. It’s putting in the work to build a happy relationship and two happy individuals, too. Here’s the thing, though: sometimes the challenges that arise threaten (and prove) to dismantle a marriage. The good news is there are experts who specialize in helping couples to properly address and overcome these challenges, including jealousy, infidelity, burnout, financial strain, and a difference in values or beliefs.

The exact issue isn’t what’s important: what’s important is your willingness to work through the issue with your partner. As long as you are willing to put in the work, a marriage therapist or psychologist at Thriveworks Bethesda can help you to save or improve your marriage. These professionals can also teach you tools for properly addressing issues that arise in the future. If you think you could find value in marriage therapy, call Thriveworks Bethesda today at (240) 513-3093.

Who Should Receive Marriage Therapy?

We all put our relationships on the backburner from time to time. We endure long hours at work, focus on spending time with our kids, and drown in chores at home. But at some point, we need to turn some attention back to our marriage. A marriage therapist or psychologist can give you helpful tips for making time for your spouse and communicating properly when life does get a little hectic. Additionally, they can assist you with having difficult conversations about…

  • Jealousy
  • Infidelity
  • Burnout
  • Trust issues
  • Financial Strain
  • Differing values or beliefs
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of intimacy

How Can Therapy Help?

Marriage therapy aims to help couples recognize and resolve conflicts as well improve their overall relationship. We accomplish this mission at Thriveworks Bethesda by offering individualized care. In other words, your therapist or psychologist will get to know you, your partner, and your relationship. Then, as we mentioned above, your therapist will develop a treatment plan that takes your specific needs and goals into consideration, of which might include learning to communicate more effectively, talking through potential problem areas, or even working one on one with your therapist in addition to your sessions together.

Your therapist will use their skills, experience, and training to create the best possible experience in treatment—one that yields real results. Every single one of our providers cares deeply about their clients. And they are dedicated to succeeding in their mission of helping couples to build better relationships. I couldn't have asked for a better therapist. Nina Zuriff is such a good fit for me. She is very knowledgeable and compassionate. She has really helped me cope with this very hard time I am currently experiencing and makes herself reachable should an emergency arise. I am very happy I selected Nina. I would highly recommend her to anyone.

I tried to call billing; I missed an evening telehealth appointment because of a widespread power outage from the massive storms of 1/9/2024. Offshore personnel had no idea what I was talking about; they said they were in the Phillippines, and in addition the language barrier was quite severe. Health professionals here are wonderful to work with; however, technical or financial issues are difficult to straighten out. I gave up and will just deal with the treating persons here.
