What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and positive psychology.

  • Cognitive reframing
  • Increased self-care practices
  • Radical acceptance

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

During sessions, I conduct:

  • Self-report assessments
  • Review of PHQ9 scores

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

As a therapist, I gauge the client's progress through various indicators observed during our sessions. Firstly, I rely on self-report assessments and the review of PHQ9 scores, which provide quantitative measures of the client's symptoms and mood over time. Additionally, I assess the client's engagement in therapy, noting their active participation, willingness to explore emotions, and openness to feedback and new coping strategies. Progress is also evident when the client demonstrates an improved understanding of their thought patterns and behaviors, as well as their ability to implement and generalize coping skills learned in therapy to real-life situations. Furthermore, positive changes in the client's mood, behavior, and overall functioning serve as key indicators of progress against depression.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

To supplement counseling, clients can:

  • Utilize coping skills outside of sessions
  • Use positive self-talk
  • Increase attention to self-care

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for sessions, clients should:

  • Formulate preliminary goals
  • Identify issues contributing to depression symptoms
  • Consider medication evaluation for pharmaceutical interventions, if appropriate

There are also many other factors that can come into play in the development of depression, both genetic and environmental. A depression counselor or psychologist can help you explore these potential causes, which will then assist them in coming up with the best treatment for you.

Depression comes with many debilitating symptoms, some of which we touched on above. Here’s a more comprehensive list:

  • Intense sadness
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Guilt or self-hatred
  • Changes in energy levels
  • Significant weight gain or loss
  • Lack of motivation
  • Fatigue
  • Diminished focus
  • Disinterest in day to day activities
  • Suicidal thoughts

Treatment for Depression: Counseling and Medication

There are two main treatments for depression: counseling (or therapy) and medication. Both have proven effective, but some individuals benefit more from one than the other. Let’s discuss these two approaches to treatment further:

  1. Counseling: If you’re feeling depressed, counseling can help you understand why and, more importantly, how you can begin to feel better. This might involve addressing unresolved feelings, learning to grieve properly, and/or correcting negative thoughts. As we mentioned earlier, your experience in counseling will be unique to you.
  2. Medication: Some people benefit from medication for depression, such as antidepressants. These work by balancing chemicals in the brain (neurotransmitters) that impact one’s mood and emotions. Antidepressants can resolve different symptoms of depression, including mood, sleep, appetite, and focus.

I couldn't have asked for a better therapist. Nina Zuriff is such a good fit for me. She is very knowledgeable and compassionate. She has really helped me cope with this very hard time I am currently experiencing and makes herself reachable should an emergency arise. I am very happy I selected Nina. I would highly recommend her to anyone.

I tried to call billing; I missed an evening telehealth appointment because of a widespread power outage from the massive storms of 1/9/2024. Offshore personnel had no idea what I was talking about; they said they were in the Phillippines, and in addition the language barrier was quite severe. Health professionals here are wonderful to work with; however, technical or financial issues are difficult to straighten out. I gave up and will just deal with the treating persons here.
