What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

For clients struggling with PTSD/trauma, I combine client-centered therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). With client-centered therapy, I establish a nonjudgmental environment where clients can openly share their stories, fostering a sense of being heard and understood. CBT techniques are utilized to help clients identify and challenge any distorted beliefs that may be impacting their well-being. This integrated approach aims to promote self-awareness and empower clients to manage their beliefs that fuel their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors more effectively. Moreover, I assist the client in crafting detailed trauma narratives, which ultimately help shift traumatic events from the forefront of their mind to become mere background noise.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

In aiding clients dealing with PTSD/trauma, I teach them about the structure of the ego personality, relaxation techniques to alleviate hyperarousal, emotional awareness and examination, reframing and restructuring beliefs, and the significance of crafting vivid trauma narratives at their pace.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when they demonstrate improved emotional regulation, reduced hyperarousal symptoms, increased ability to cope with triggers, and a greater sense of self-awareness and empowerment. They may also show signs of decreased avoidance behaviors, enhanced interpersonal relationships, and a gradual shift from feeling overwhelmed by trauma memories to gaining a sense of mastery and control over their emotions and experiences. Additionally, clients making meaningful progress often exhibit increased engagement in therapy, willingness to explore difficult emotions and memories, and a growing ability to implement healthy coping strategies in their daily lives.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement PTSD/trauma therapy in their personal time by practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or meditation to reduce stress and anxiety. Engaging in regular physical exercise can also help release pent-up tension and promote overall well-being. Journaling can be a valuable tool for processing emotions, thoughts, and trauma-related experiences. Seeking out support from trusted friends, family members, or support groups can provide additional emotional support and validation. Engaging in creative activities such as art, music, or writing can serve as a cathartic outlet for expressing and processing emotions. Finally, practicing self-care activities such as getting adequate rest, maintaining a healthy diet, and engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation can contribute to a sense of balance and resilience in coping with PTSD/trauma.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy, individuals should spend time reflecting on their traumatic experiences and emotions, identify specific goals or areas they want to work on, gather relevant information about their trauma, establish a support network, practice self-care techniques such as relaxation and mindfulness, approach therapy with an open mind and willingness to explore difficult emotions, and set realistic expectations for the therapeutic process. These steps can help individuals feel more prepared and engaged in their therapy journey.

Shame on Thrive works. My partner and I have been seeing a therapist and liked her. BUT both last week and this week we drove to Duluth location (35 minutes from my house), waited in the waiting room, only to find out our therapist wasn’t even there!!! Called to inquire why and basically got no reason. I received both the text message confirming my appointment and the emails. What if we were in crisis??? So disappointed with them.

Working with Eboni has truly transformed my life but also the personal love I have for myself. I’d thought I was need of therapy due to stress from my job. After a few months I realize that I was going to be tackling more than just work issues. Eboni was absolutely phenomenal in her quietness when I needed to see myself and determine the truth behind any problems I was trying to work through. I’m so much better because of it and I’m so happy that I made the decision to start. Though I still have a lot to work on;I can already see a difference and so can everyone else! Thank you Eboni!!

My counselor, Eboni, is amazing and finds different ways using different resources to help me seek better insight. She is highly recommended if you are looking for someone to deal with self-esteem and anger management issues.
