What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

Grief and loss counseling aims to provide a supportive and empathetic environment for clients to express and process their emotions related to loss. The process includes validating the client's feelings, exploring the impact of the loss, and aiding them through the grief stages, with the overarching goal of helping clients cope, adjust, and move forward.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

Counselors employ various techniques in grief and loss counseling, including:

  • Cognitive restructuring to address unhelpful thoughts about the loss
  • Mindfulness practices for emotional awareness and acceptance
  • Personalized coping strategies and self-care
  • Narrative therapy to create a meaningful narrative of the loss

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

Meaningful progress is seen when clients show improved coping strategies, like openly expressing emotions and engaging in self-care, alongside moments of acceptance and peace. Indicators also include increased resilience, maintenance of important relationships, returning to daily routines, finding renewed purpose, decreasing emotional distress, and integrating the loss into their life story.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

To supplement grief and loss counseling, clients can engage in activities supporting emotional healing, such as:

  • Journaling and mindfulness for stress management
  • Participating in support groups or grief workshops
  • Physical exercise for mood improvement
  • Creative expression through art, music, or writing
  • Exploring grief-related resources like books, podcasts, or forums
  • Self-reflection, self-care practices, and honoring the deceased through rituals or activities

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

Preparing for grief and loss counseling involves reflecting on one’s emotions, thoughts, and experiences related to the loss, gathering information about the loss circumstances, previous coping strategies, and the current support system. Setting realistic expectations, maintaining an open and honest mindset, being willing to engage in therapeutic exercises and discussions, and committing to regular attendance can enhance the counseling experience.

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in Duluth, GA have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Duluth, GA will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

Shame on Thrive works. My partner and I have been seeing a therapist and liked her. BUT both last week and this week we drove to Duluth location (35 minutes from my house), waited in the waiting room, only to find out our therapist wasn’t even there!!! Called to inquire why and basically got no reason. I received both the text message confirming my appointment and the emails. What if we were in crisis??? So disappointed with them.

Working with Eboni has truly transformed my life but also the personal love I have for myself. I’d thought I was need of therapy due to stress from my job. After a few months I realize that I was going to be tackling more than just work issues. Eboni was absolutely phenomenal in her quietness when I needed to see myself and determine the truth behind any problems I was trying to work through. I’m so much better because of it and I’m so happy that I made the decision to start. Though I still have a lot to work on;I can already see a difference and so can everyone else! Thank you Eboni!!

My counselor, Eboni, is amazing and finds different ways using different resources to help me seek better insight. She is highly recommended if you are looking for someone to deal with self-esteem and anger management issues.
