What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

In couple/marriage counseling, I go with an integrated approach that blends client-centered therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Through client-centered therapy, I create a safe and non-judgmental space where both partners can openly share their experiences, feelings, and concerns. This approach fosters a deep sense of being heard and understood, which is foundational for effective communication and connection. I incorporate CBT techniques to assist couples in identifying and challenging any unhelpful beliefs leading to negative emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that may be affecting their relationship dynamics. By exploring and addressing these underlying beliefs, couples can gain greater self-awareness and insight into their interactions within the relationship. The goal is to empower couples to manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors more effectively, leading to improved communication, healthier relationship dynamics, and enhanced overall well-being within the partnership.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

In couples/marriage counseling, I integrate communication styles as a powerful tool alongside the CBT triangle. We explore how each partner's communication style influences their interactions and relationship dynamics. By understanding these styles, couples can work towards more effective and empathetic communication, fostering deeper understanding and connection. I encourage couples to be solution-focused vs. problem-focused, emphasizing the importance of seeking compromises and mutually beneficial solutions. We collaborate to identify practical strategies and compromises that address the challenges and conflicts within the relationship. These tools help empower couples to navigate difficulties together, fostering resilience and growth within their partnership.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

In couple/marriage counseling, I often observe substantial progress in couples when they become more aware of their unhelpful beliefs and transition from negative thought patterns to a more positive outlook. This transformation is reflected in their improved communication skills, leading to greater understanding and connection with their partner. As they gain insights into the influence of perspective, they also recognize their ability to choose which perspectives to prioritize and invest energy in. Couples begin to approach challenges with a solution-focused mindset, seeking compromises and mutually beneficial resolutions. Couples gain a healthier relationship dynamic which empowers them to navigate difficulties with resilience and cooperation.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

As a valuable supplement to couples/marriage counseling, clients can enhance their emotional management skills by incorporating mindfulness practices and staying present with their feelings. By viewing emotions as signals that point to underlying unhelpful beliefs, clients can deepen their self-awareness of unconscious beliefs that are causing distress in the relationship. Writing down these unhelpful beliefs outside of therapy sessions can provide valuable insights into ingrained belief patterns, which can then be explored and restructured during counseling sessions. This proactive approach empowers clients to actively participate in their therapeutic process and fosters positive changes within themselves and their relationship dynamics.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

Before their marriage/couples counseling intake, couples can take time to reflect on the challenges they're experiencing in the relationship. This reflection allows them to have a clear understanding of what they want to discuss and address with the counselor. It's also beneficial for couples to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their relationship, providing valuable context for the counseling process. Additionally, approaching the counseling session with a mindset focused on learning better communication strategies, solution-focused approaches, and the willingness to compromise can greatly enhance the effectiveness of the therapy.

Shame on Thrive works. My partner and I have been seeing a therapist and liked her. BUT both last week and this week we drove to Duluth location (35 minutes from my house), waited in the waiting room, only to find out our therapist wasn’t even there!!! Called to inquire why and basically got no reason. I received both the text message confirming my appointment and the emails. What if we were in crisis??? So disappointed with them.
