Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training, or IMST, is exercising the muscles you use to breathe in. And according to researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder, it could improve your physical and mental health.
This practice involves breathing in vigorously through a hand-held device. The team found that engaging in this exercise for just five minutes a day reduces blood pressure, improves heart health, sharpens memory, and enhances physical performance.
Researchers say IMST is particularly beneficial because it can be done quickly and conveniently. Their hope is that adults will perform this time-efficient exercise and reap the benefits.
